The wood in these (which I think started in 1984) is \u201creal\u201d and not Ford\u2019s applique\u2019 molded plastic wood. It was somewhat innovative since it\u2019s not a veneer but I remember it had habit of becoming loose over time and falling off. This car has all of its wood, but it is lifting in some places and I did not do anything except keep track of it. The lenses for the door courtesy lights are apt to fall out. This car has all of its lenses and two extra in the glove box. The flat black trim around the doors sometimes looked scratched or like it was pulling up. This car has all of it, all adhered and in good shape. The mouse fur flocking is still lining the glove box. Lastly is the subject of sound insulation. These cars are remarkably quiet and soft for being a unibody chassis. One of the ways they stopped the transmission of sound traveling through the body is kind of rudimentary but it must have worked. Lincoln located black plastic that looks for all intents and purposes like Hefty trash sacks full of yellow fiberglass insulation on the top of the each wheel well. The first time I remembered seeing a corner of this this poking out of a wheel well many years ago, I had the inclination to pull at it thinking someone on the assembly line had left behind some detail plastic. I quickly figured out it was supposed to be there! Anyway, those bags had a habit of splitting and getting full of road debris, water that would become a soup. This car still has all of its hefty bags intact, sealed and dry. \r\nThe man who details my cars said this is probably the best original paint job on a car of this period that he\u2019s ever seen and I tend to agree. (Incidentally, he located the build sheets under the front seat and they should be in the pictures). This is my first Valentino edition and I\u2019m guessing it was no accident that all the \u201cjewelry\u201d of the car (the badging and wheel centers) are cordovan-colored and coordinate with the upper half of the car. It lends a really nice look. Chrome is in good shape and not pitted. Plastic cladding covering the bumpers is nice. Pinstriping is original and complete. Door strikers, latches and various under hood components still have the gold tinted anodizing on them.\r\n I can\u2019t think of anything else to include, aside from some personal opinion. I\u2019ve had each of the 1980s-period \u201cbustleback\u201d cars and my closing opinion isn\u2019t about the preference of the various designs. To each his own\u2026 This is more about the mechanical aspects of these cars and why I like this car in particular. I appreciate the easy start aspects of fuel injection and the LACK of the sometimes troublesome Teves ABS system that became an option the next year. This has the regular 4-wheel-disc brakes. The injected 302 is extremely reliable and has plenty of power to climb hills without all the noise and drama that my bustleback Sevilles would display on the most modest inclines. I most definitely prefer the simplicity of this suspension which, as far as I know only measures ride level as compared to the \u201cadvances\u201d of the later front wheel drive Continentals that were supposed to read the road surface and adjust handling (and steering). I had trouble with those. I also preciate the tidy dimensions, the ride, and the way these drive. This one in particular drives and rides like they did new.\r\n If you\u2019re like me, there\u2019s a couple more things you might appreciate about these cars. First, you\u2019ll never meet yourself coming and going in a bustle back Continental. While you might see an occasional Seville out on the road or at a local car show, odds are, you\u2019re not going to see a designer series bustleback Lincoln Continental. I also like that this relative rarity does not apply when you go to the parts counter if you need to replace something! I\u2019m fairly certain the majority of the mechanicals of these cars were widely shared with other Ford product and are still readily available. Regardless, I wanted to add some details to the description as noted by Bring a Trailer and to answer any questions that might come up. \r\n The story of the car isn\u2019t particularly unique but I found the way it was preserved and stored particularly noteworthy. I bought the car from the son of the second owner after his father passed away and he began liquidating his car collection. According to the son, his dad purchased the car from a business associate in 1988 and kept it on the family farm in Iowa for a couple of years. In 1990 the car was relocated to the family\u2019s winter home in Florida where it was kept in a building. This storage building was where I looked at the car. Once there I noticed it was the only car of its kind, which is to say ALL the others were muscle cars and mostly Mopars. It sounded like this was primarily his mom\u2019s car and she would drive the car around their community at dad\u2019s request to keep it in running order. As a side note, I suspect the first owner spent a fair amount of time choosing which Continental he wanted as there was copious amounts of dealer and Continental specific information that came with the car.\r\n I had our mechanic go through it after we shipped it home from our place in Florida and he gave it a clean bill of health. He said the belts and hoses were in good shape, as were the front brakes and rotors, which appeared of have all been changed recently. He put in a new battery and replaced a loose/cracked grommet for the kickdown linkage at the throttle. \r\nThere are two things I noticed about this car (as compared to the other Continentals I have owned). The first is that this car sat for two months at our Florida home while we were away and when I returned, it was not sitting down on its haunches. I have had a few of the bustle back cars and some of the front wheel drive Continentals. Some of these (especially the front wheel drive ones) sometimes squat down after they sit for a while. While it\u2019s not unusual to see some squatting, I was surprised that this one didn\u2019t seem to sag much at all. Start ups are met with very brief operation of the compressor to compensate for driver\u2019s weight and that\u2019s about it. The second thing I noticed is, on that same trip (again, having sat for two months) was that the car started immediately despite having absent mindedly left the battery connected. It continued to do so all summer when I would take it for drives and in storage this winter. Cold start up is quiet and it goes through the normal cold and warm operating temperature rpm steps. The transmission shifts into all gears and the torque converter locks up as it should. All of that is noted in the videos, but please forgive my general lack of skill when it comes to making videos on my phone and downloading them to YouTube. I realize my video was cut short and I still don\u2019t know where the rest of it went. \r\n All options on the car operate, including all the many features of the rather superfluous trip computer. The digital gauges and fuel level operate correctly. As previously noted, the \u201clow washer fluid\u201d light is like the Rudolf\u2019s nose that never turns off no matter the fluid level. The headlight automatic sentinel and auto dim still operate. The windows, power locks and trunk pull-down all operate. All the door window sweeps are all crack-free, the door sills are all intact and very good. The twin-power front seats operate as they should, and neither have notable bolster wear. And not to be rude but the seats appear to have been sat in by a driver and passenger of average or less weight\u2014which is to say, they aren\u2019t broke down and the wide cord inserts are free of wear or splitting. The headliner is perfect. The lighted entry group still works as does the key pad. And yes, the Continental script on the dashboard still glows at night. Of note, this spring the air conditioner compressor did operate and was checked by out mechanic and found to be low on R12. My first car as a senior in high school was an '85 Continental Valentino Edition in black and gold two-tone with a tan velour interior. It was at a small used car lot in town that I drove by all the time, and it was so unique and unusual looking that I had to check it out. Needless to say I loved it, and for $1,500 it was mine.\r\n\r\nMy old Continental had its issues, but it's still one of the smoothest and most comfortable cars I've driven to this day. My buddies would sit in the back and pretend to read the newspaper while ordering Grey Poupon with the C-pillar reading light on. My first automotive eBay adventure was attempting to find a working power trunk closer, and I was successful. \r\n\r\nMy Continental lasted about 7 months until the transmission gave up (no one had changed the fluid in 120k miles and 18 years), and it cost more than it was worth to fix it. I still have a soft spot for these Fox-Body Continentals, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen one. It introduced me to basic vehicle mechanics and the glory of V8s and RWD. Never fast, the car was always comfortable and reliable with catch up maintenance done. What fond memories of my childhood going to my grandparents' house and later my teen years into college. It led to 4 Mark VII LSCs, one of which I still have. And while these were Fox Fords with pedestrian underpinnings, the air suspension and other Lincoln specific bits truly made them unique. Build quality is quite high, much higher than the DN5 (V8 FWD) Continentals my parents purchased years later with huge dealer mark downs. Contrary to whatever lazy or incompetent mechanics will say, the air suspension and other systems on the car, even the ABS (which this year doesn't have) is pretty simple with diagnostic procedures available online and outlined in there factory service manuals available on eBay. For the Fox Fords with an AOD, a brass throttle valve bushing (F3SZ-7H303-B) is a must if the plastic one still exists to prevent the throttle valve cable from disconnecting and burning the overdrive band in the AOD. LincolnsOnline.com has a write up on the replacement.\r\n\r\nThis car appears to be an excellent example and the wood trim is intact. There was an optional campaign by Ford to replace the real wood with plastic woodgrain pieces when the cars were new. I remember my parents' car had it done and it didn't look as good in retrospect. Of note, the optional wire wheels (standard on Valentinos I believe) are alloys with actual spokes bolted to the wheel; they are not covers. This car appears to have the original air suspension springs. This isn't an issue as they appear not to be cracking. The original Goodyear and later Firestone springs easily last 10 years/100k miles with regular use. I had original springs last up to 18 years and over 100k miles. This car also has a very rare Lincoln trunk mat. These are very hard to find and fit the trunk well perfectly. Interestingly, as a first year car, options were not simplified until later. This car has a couple option groups that netted automatic headlights with auto dimming but lacks power recline seats and the full overhead console with compass and outside temperature.
