For several years, I had a 2002, also in Burgundy Pearl, but with the Black/Alcantara interior. It was a GREAT car that had Toyota-like reliability for us and was a blast to drive. It\u2019s quite a shame how many of these cars fall into disrepair over the years. \r\n\r\n\r\nFYI to you @seller or whoever buys the car and wants to replace the door panels: The S8s that have Alcantara actually have, what Audi called, the \u201cAlcantara and Extended Leather Package\u201d. In the USA, those two things were bundled together in a single package. Alcantara is obvious at this point, but \u201cExtended Leather\u201d meant that all the door panels, the glove box, the driver\u2019s side knee panel and the sides of the center console were all covered in leather. As an example, if you look at photo# 70, you can see the stitching of the leather on the arm rest (which ALL A8 and S8s would have), but you can ALSO see the stitching of the leather as it extends forward up the rest of door panel. This would only be present on cars that have Alcantara and you can see it on all four door panels.\r\n\r\n\r\nIf you look at pictures 61 & 65 you can see the leather stitching on the glove box lid and then down into the center console. That is only on cars with this package. \r\n\r\n\r\nIf you look at pictures 74, 76 and just a little bit in 83, you can see it on the driver\u2019s side too. \r\n\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, the USA never got a leather covered dash option, but it was available in Europe. It's NOT rude: it's normal and healthy and frankly, serious people who aren't financial imbeciles inspect cars or have cars inspected _before_ buying. You'll notice the quality sellers here on BaT, WOB, 1600veloce, etc---they never fight their potential buyer pool over reasonable questions. Truly serious big-money sellers hire pros to sell, and truly serious buyers hire a professional like Tony Rienzi to assist them with inspections and due diligence when they buy a car. The rest of us might hire @Switchcars, or just have a local technician or marque specialist assist us. But the bottom line is, no detail is too small of a question for a potential buyer to ask on a purchase that can go upside-down in a hurry. And when you're not looking at a car in the flesh, everything is a question mark.\r\n\r\nIn this case, the front door panels tell us a story. That story could be any one of: the car was flooded, a previous detailer sprayed harsh, abrasive chemicals on the door cards attempting to clean them but releasing the dye in the leather/fabric, or any number of other possible circumstances. To my eyes, it looks like a troublesome detail, or the former owner spilled his coffee when he stopped short. Not a dealbreaker necessarily, but I would need the smell remediated. In cases like these, a savvy buyer gets a rough estimate for the cost of fixing the issue, and then adds that cost to the overall budget to get the car into the shape they desire, which informs the theoretical top bid they should place for the car.\r\n\r\nThis car may be a real peach--I wouldn't say it's not one! Typically, around the 100k, mark the fuel pump and coils need replacing. The stock pump has a special extra pickup port on the bottom, so skip the cheap substitutes or you will be running out of fuel at a half tank. Better than stock Audi turbo red top coils are available for beer money. Also there is a plastic pipe between the oil cooler assembly & the block that cracks causing coolant leaks at the front right passenger's side. An aftermarket alloy replacement is available for about $25. Replacement requires a contortionist - btdt. \r\n\r\nVariable cam timing is accomplished by a hydraulic piston with curved plastic shoes or guides, top and bottom, situated between the intake and exhaust cams on both banks. Rattle on start up is a tell that, at the very least, the shoes have perished or more likely the hydraulic bore is scored to the point that it no longer holds tension without the engine running. As a result, on startup it hops up and down like an epileptic on a pogo-stick shattering the brittle shoes. Original parts are NLA, but chineesium is available. \r\n\r\nThe moat between the firewall and the engine collects leaves and detritus. The ECU and TCU are there as well. In a carwash or rainstorm, it can fill up and drown your computers. Clean the area and pinch the wheel well drain nipples to keep them clear. Pinch your own, if that helps.\r\n\r\nOh yeah, replace all of the fabric wrapped vacuum line that runs all over the engine bay. Why use solenoids when vacuum can trigger stuff too? And they say Germans don't have a sense of humor. It is a cheap easy fix. \r\n\r\nThe killer for this model though is transmission failure. There was a guy by the screen-name of Gabor in Chicago who rebuilds them. See Audiworld & Quattroworld D2 forums. I don't know if he still does or if there are any other reliable rebuilders out there. They were offered in Europe with a 6 speed manual 01E gearbox. The 01E from behind any tdi engined Audi is the one to get with an overdrive 6th that allows highway speed without over-revving. I beat mine for about 15 years and when the transmission gave up at 180k, I donated it for parts. Life got in the way of doing a 6 speed swap.\r\n\r\nThe D2 is stealth wealth, that could be mistaken for an overgrown Camry. Equipped with double-paned door glass, it is bank-vault quiet and a great sedan for a long drive. The body and all the panels are aluminum with only the subframes and some suspension bits made of steel. In good nick, It is a great ride.
