The Muncie M-21 transmission is definitely the original \"born with\" transmission. I have pictures before and after it was professionally rebuilt/restored by one of the top Muncie builders in the country. It is date coded September 15, 1969 which is just prior to the 09D build date (the 4th week of September 1969). The VIN fonts used on the Buick manual transmissions were not the same as the ones they used on the engine blocks. The VIN font size was at times a much larger font on the Muncie transmissions as seen in the picture above. I can provide the before pics of the transmission of this car to anyone that is interested in bidding if they still have questions. I also have pictures of other Buick Muncie transmissions with this same large font. This car/drivetrain is completely numbers matching, with a few upgrades like disc brakes, 15\" chrome rally wheels, and tilt steering. In 1970 when I was 16, and living in rural northern Illinois, my brother and I convinced our father to buy a \u201970 GS 455 for our mother. She had previously driven Thunderbirds. There was a town 11 miles away that I would regularly go to, to see the girls. The 11 miles consisted of a 2 mile straight, then an \u201cs\u201d curve, another 4 mile straight, then a long-left curve, followed by 3 mile straight. I had a 12:00 midnight curfew. I used to leave for home at 11:55 and try to make it home by 12:00. The middle 4 mile straight was my Mulsanne. There was little traffic at that hour. As soon as I exited the \u201cS\u201d curve, already going 90 mph, I would position the car in the middle of the road, put the pedal to the floor all the way for the next 4 miles. This was not a Stage 1, and had an axle ratio of around 3.00, meaning \u201ctop speed baby.\u201d The speedometer would get to the 6 o\u2019clock position, meaning somewhere around 140 mph for the whole 4 miles. It\u2019s amazing I never killed myself or someone else. I once got a radar speeding ticket for 89 mph, when I was \u201cslowing down\u201d about a quarter of a mile from town. I shutter to even think of the garbage tires I did that on over and over again. The biggest take away: how quiet and drama free car was doing this stuff(?!) Idle at 500rpm in gear, you can barely hear it running. As a sign of how powerful/fast these 455's were \"back in the day\" one Sunday I took it to Rockford Ill. Dagway, located in Byron IL. The car was a standard GS 455 with auto and air and the 2.93 open rear end. it had stock Firestone Wide Ovals for tires. I was a complete novice on the drag strip. I made three runs that day. They were a 15.09, 15.06, and a 14.93. I kept the 14.93 time slip in my billfold for a least a year. That was pretty quick for what the car and more importantly the driver were for that period.
