We cannot find any evidence that EB1845 was a Team Elite car or any further info on what became of EB1736 (but we know it no longer exists) but it is likely that EB1845 was a replacement body shell \u2013 Lotus Elite records accuracy unfortunately is not 100% and there are numerous documented instances of engine/body mismatches.\r\n\r\nEngine #9587 is currently in Elite EB1838, another Super95 car with (now refinished in British Racing Green) but this is shown in Ortenburger's first edition of 'Lotus' as originally installed in chassis # EB1735. It had to start cold and rise to operating RPM immediately, so it has wider clearances than modern engines. The steel cam gear reference is to one known weak spot -- in an effort to reduce noise, the original cam gears were a fiber material known for shredding itself in naughty ways at high RPM. I can't speak for how noisy the metal gears are, the ones I've heard running were not awfully loud but I don't know what gears they were running. The Coventry Climax was a very popular racing engine in its day. \r\n\r\nThe body, except for the referenced subframe rails, is entirely fiberglass -- there is no frame. This accounts for the drumming inside as well. There are many opinions that the subframes, really just steel rails embedded in the engine bay to support the engine, weren't really needed. They were used due to concerns that the engine vibration might tear up the plastic mounting holes. \r\n\r\nBeyond this, early cars (this is an S2 so I believe had the fix, but it would have been applied anyway) did have an issue with torque from the axle pulling the mounts loose when driven with lots of onions. \r\n\r\nThe final problem this car is well beyond is that the paint was really bad on many early cars -- so bad that the distributors routinely repainted them prior to selling them. This caused a reputation that the grace and performance didn't overcome in the day. Lotus lost money on every one they sold. An amazing piece of history, engineering, and art. I have heard that there was frequently interesting accounting such as two cars built with the same chassis number, to make ends meet, and always two vendors sourced so that when one refused to ship due to lack of payment, Lotus could draw from the other. The early Sevens ( which we call series one now) were relatively expensive to build. The Series 2 Sevens were cost reduced to nudge them towards profitability, to the point that the frames were too weak, and I think Lotus as a whole probably didn't really make a profit until the Elan started rolling out. He knew that his materials to build cars came by the Lb, and the more parts, the more Lbs. and the more time to assemble. His drive towards \"Simplify and add lightness\" was powered by a firm grip on his money, of which he was usually short of. Everything from the lack of a chassis in the Elite, to his Chapman Strut suspension was a simplification and reduction of parts to attain a goal. Chapman was brilliant. \r\n\r\nI was the owner of a Lotus 7, Series 1. Champman built these lightweight (907 lbs, dripping wet with road equipment), relatively rugged machines, with such details as a full undertray, fully riveted to the chassis, nose to tail. The sides of the space frame were fully triangulated, and there was bracing in the rear to stiffen the chassis. The engine was set back to the driver's knee. \r\n\r\nWell, that was a lot of work to build (as brilliant as it was), so the Series 2 came along, and some Lotus fanatics will tell you that Chapman wanted to improve the car by lightening it by 50 Lbs. What he really wanted to do was to lighten it by 50 quid... So the triangulation in the middle of the chassis was eliminated, replaced by \"skin plate\", alloy sheet covered with cheap red vinyl, riveted in place. The undertray skin was cut from under the engine and the rear suspension, cutting the time to skin the chassis by half (important since the chassis were contracted out). The engine moved forward to allow taller drivers (more sales). So, fewer tubes to braze into place, less labor and materials to skin the chassis, while the sale price stayed the same. Nearly a profit... \r\nChapman made out well with the DeLorean contract, only to find out that he was under investigation over that very contract. Anyway, he passed suddenly (maybe, say some Lotus conspiracy theorists). \r\nOf course, if you have a Lotus 7 Series 2, and didn't want the chassis to crack, the triangulation was added back into the chassis (as it is in the current Caterham). Interestingly enough, the 7 is still with us, and still profitable. but not at Lotus. \r\nThe reality was more complex, as the company had a healthy consulting side, a successful F1 Team, and the Elan. There was brilliance in the designs and their execution. The name is still with us, as is the basic idea of small, lightweight sports cars of advanced design. \r\nThe Elite was a favorite of mine, as it was just my size when I first saw one at the age of 7. It is on my list of dream cars, in fact mush as this one is equipped, with the two tone, Webers... Of course, I would put a set of Dunlop vintage race tires on it, but that's just me. Its design is incredibly beautiful, the interior perfectly simple. It still is the perfect (if tiny) car of that period. I loved the Elite even more than before after I installed it. I drove mine on two thousand mile rallies, the Texas 1000 and the Copperstate where it kept up with cars having engines twice the size.
