They were unique as this arrangement along with the higher lift and duration cams made for a higher torque ration then other designs that were going around. But alas with the more restrictive passageways and smaller valves they hit a limitation on HP and displacement. So it was a trade off. But at a time when everyone was coming out with new high compression OHV V8's after WWII each companies' engineers wanted to try something different. Chevy had their small block, Olds had their \"Rockets\", Chrysler had their Wedge and Hemi and Buick had the Nailhead. Because of the design of the combustion chamber, the intake valves were sufficient in size but the remaining area left little room for the exhaust valves. The exhaust valves were quite small and looked like a common nail's head. Hence the nick name. The engines did breath good thanks to port design and cam timing. Very good and dependable engines with a lot of low end torque.\n\nI love them. I worked as a Buick Dealership mechanic from 1966 for over twenty years. I miss working on them but still own seven of them. Four in Buicks, one in a 1953 Ford F100 and two as spares.\n\n1963 was the last year of the Dynaflow transmission. It was replaced by the Super Turbine 400 in 1964 upper series Buick's. I had a 1964 Buick Wildcat from new for many years. Great car. My 1953 Ford F100 has a 401 nail-head with a Dynaflow since 1970. It was a daily driver for over 15 years. Now for shows and fun. I always loved the Dynaflow. Pop Kenny raced a 1960 Electra 225 convertible to NHRA championships in the very early 60's using the 401 with a Dynaflow.\n\nNice Wildcat. If I remember correctly, in 1962 (first year) the Wildcats all came with a white vinyl top. Not sure about the 1963 models. In 1964 they dropped many of the standard features to keep the prices lower. My 1964 had a blue bench seat interior but it did have a great factory AC system. \n\nNice looking Wildcat. Good thing I had no idea how the parking brake released. She was tiny, but her Buicks were all huge, until the 1980s Detroit malaise which produced a real turd of a mid-sized LeSabre. But Omi was faithful to the brand right until the end. Opa (grandpa) was captain of an oil tanker for Mobil Oil. He never drove any of the Buicks. He always made Omi drive while he smoked his pipe, or cigar, and barked instructions to her from the passenger seat. One summer they took the Buick back to Germany for vacation. She had to helm the Stra\u00dfenkreuzer (\"street-battleship\") through winding, narrow, post-war, southern German roads. 1960s Germans had rarely witnessed such excess and daring. I suspect Opa never wanted to sacrifice the luxury of being a captain, no matter where or how he traveled. It was silver with the black interior. What a car it was. It was big, it was heavy and it would rip. Got mileage in the single digits around town (could not keep right foot off that pedal) here in the hills of western PA. Maybe 13 on the highway. I was 18 years old, gas was .25 cents a gallon, I was working 60 hours a week in the mill making $2.99 per hour plus the overtime man life was good. The Ick as I referred to her died an untimely death late one night at my older brothers hands. I think he told me something about a telephone pole jumping out in front of him on the passenger side. He claimed he tried to swerve out of the way but the pole caught the Ick right in front of the C pillar and bent it up really bad. My brother walked away unscathed but the Ick took a fatal blow that night. Sad that she was totaled but I still have my brother. Replaced her with a 1966 Dodge Coronet 2 door hardtop. Red with a white roof, white interior, bucket seats automatic on the floor with a much more sensible poly 318 V8. Did love that car though it was one awesome ride.
