I'm an enthusiast in CA and a CL junkie, scouring western US several days a week for all my favorite cars. There is usually one or two 840s for sale on the west coast. They are 90% high mile cars now, and salvage titles are not rare. The 840s were owned by enthusiasts who like to drive them, not treat as garage queens. The 840 can be driven with less worry of horrific bills which occasionally come with any V12. Hence many of the 840s ended up for sale with 200k miles and up, selling for 5 -6k, and not selling very quickly. I suspect many have ended up parted out after repair estimates which exceeded their value. I have certainly seen a fair number of driven hard, put away wet drivers with failed clear coat, dings, dents, toasted interiors, \"runs but needs work\" in the parting out columns. When a nice low mile 840 comes up for sale the seem to sit a while. It seems only recently have they bottomed and are now beginning to find a modest price increase. Now is certainly the time to invest in good ones like this one appears to be. I would never buy one without a proper ppi by an E32 specialist. The guy I know says some of these cars can easily fill two work orders with a long list of small fixes needed, but defered on cars which seem to run ok. I have always wanted a V12, but like most, the chance of a bill higher that the value of the jag, bmw, or mercedes keeps me hesitating,. I have a pristine 93 Mercedes 600SL with 33k miles in red nearby. Absolutely pefect garage queen condition, and has been sitting for weeks asking only $9500. I have hated to be the guy who bought it new, treated it as a collectors item, and then took a bath selling it. This is one of the first models BMW went the extra mile in rust prevention. You typically don't get the paint/rust bubbles you see with, for example, the e36 or a lot of prior models. If I recall correctly they started to galvanize problem areas and/or started using a better metal on the e31 than in previous models. I can understand the call for underside pictures though, the mufflers are prone to corrosion, as is the rest of the exhaust system to a degree. If I couldn't get underside pictures up, as seller I'd guarantee no corrosion as it would definitely put two or three bidders back in it.
