A friend who worked at my shop had the Ferrari dream pretty badly, and satisfied it when he found and bought a fairly down trodden 365 GT 2+2. The exhaust was rotted, which made the car sound utterly fantastic. The body was a little dented and nicked, which made it much less stressful to leave in the parking lot when we went for beer. The clutch was a little worn, which made a good excuse for double clutch downshifts. He ultimately sold it to someone overseas, who still owns it and sends him photo updates every now and then. While touring Europe a few years back, my friend took a swing by the new owner's house and visited his old car. The owner threw him the keys and told him to take a drive - car people are just too cool.\r\n\r\nI'm not sure what to make of the comment on this one that the rears of the front seatbacks are worn. It is the bridge between the old and new with the last of the traditional Pininfarina styling similar to the Superfast, but mechanically including the modern creature comforts we expect in cars today. Properly maintained they are totally drivable GTs, capable of long distance touring at speeds far above posted limits. Mine felt no different at 120 than at 70. I built a fire extinguisher mount that put it in front of the driver's seat on the floor and used the existing seat mount bolts to hold it in place. What I recall vividly was trying to see where that long hood ended when I first slid behind the steering wheel. At first it was intimidating, but as with the E Type Jaguar, once you started moving you had no feeling of size or that the car \"goes on forever\"...until you tried to parallel park it. Then it again sort of asserted itself.\r\nMy wife later drove another friend's 365 from the Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca back to his home in Redwood City. This car was the same Azurro Hyperion which originally graced the subject car. I was following...in our much more compact 250 best I recall. She signaled me over a couple of times to complain about a noticeable vibration on braking. We did not switch cars and I sort of brushed it off as perhaps worn suspension bushings. Mentioned it to the friend and he later told us that one of the brake rotors turned out to be cracked. Lucky it did not come apart during the trip.\r\nThe final episode was with yet another friend's silver beast. This was after a very serious \"off\" I had at Sears Point in my Siata due to a mechanical failure. I was still pretty spooked about getting back on the track, and bringing the Siata back was a multi-year project, so people kept offering me rides at the track (though CSRG still allows this on specific occasions things were more relaxed back then). Gary Kuntz proceeded to scare the living daylights out of me in his silver 365, flinging the car around with abandon that seemed entirely inappropriate to a stately Ferrari weighing in at 4000 pounds...by far the heaviest model built to that point. But he seemed to be having no problem controlling the viscious four wheeled slides and never came near losing the car. If I had not still been having visions of the upside down world I had seen at turn 4 only months earlier I would have been more relaxed and better able to appreciate that, big as it is, this is still a Ferrari. It will never intentionally \"bite\" you as long as you give it the respect it is due. She certainly heard the roar of the V12 and turned to look over her right shoulder as we blasted by on the left. A glance in the rear view mirror confirmed that she never even saw us! A few miles later we got to one of the short straights where I could get some real speed. And there in front of us was a ancient Mercedes diesel loaded down with a ladder and all sorts of painter stuff strapped to the roof rack. If he was going 25, we must have been doing 90 when we passed - always wished I could have seen the look on the drivers face. We turned off to drop one of the guys at home and there\u2019s a town meter maid between us and his house.
