These frames are rust-prone especially in climates where rust is more prevalent. \r\n\r\nAs an owner of almost 7 years now, I can certainly say I have probably touched most if not everything on my example. I converted mine away from the K-Jet system for reasons important to me, and I'll leave it at that for now. \r\n\r\nThe costliest things on these cars are usually frame rust, certain body panels, K-Jet gremlins, and block rot. The electrics are fiddly (lots of fun Lucas stuff to play with). Some of the interior trim pieces are NLA and can be tricky/costly to track down and replace. \r\n\r\nYou will get more attention with this car than a Ferrari. I know because I've owned both.\r\n\r\nThese cars are a lot of fun though when they're sorted. This example looks very clean. During my ownership, clean ones have just about doubled in price. That's not to say there's nothing interesting about how it drives. It certainly is a peculiar feeling car and in most respects fun. The engine is the inverse of a Mazda rotary. Lots of torque, much more than you'd expect, and then no power. Half throttle feels like full throttle, once you've reached 2000 rpm you've experienced all the pulling power it has, it'll keep going but it won't give you more. Its easy to drive but not easy to make it go fast. The shifter is actually a joy. Very rewarding to slot in gear. The clutch is heavy and vague. The steering is heavy but it's non assisted so you'd expect that. The worst thing about driving a DeLorean is the fact that you can't see it when you're in it. You should hire someone with a shiny car to drive around you at all times so you can look at the reflection.\r\n\r\nThe best swap ever would be a 928's V8, but that won't happen. People have done 2JZ conversions, which is a weird configuration (I guess they really wanted a BMW M1?) but it means a 1UZ-FE (which sounds very similar to the 928's engine) should fit no problem. Or you can be unoriginal and swap in an LS motor.\r\n\r\nI love how these look. But frankly, a non-running example would give me all I want from it. I'd park it in my garden and just look at it. I am simply telling anyone interested in a car from this seller to do an in-person inspection, and be careful. In particular, I agree with the previous comments that this car appears to be hiding blemishes with the re-sprayed classis, as many areas have been touched up. I work in the automotive industry as a buyer/broker for restorations shops. I do large orders for the shops who does the restorations. I'm tax exempt but the end user can not be. If you are installing an item and it goes into a dealer's car, even though the car will be sold by the dealer, the parts are taxable. Its a sales tax, so when the items is sold to the last person, the tax is collected. Odd as it is, this is how it works. You also can not resale-tax exempt labor, shop materials. Similarly I export tires and there is a tire tax in my state. I had to prove that my tires will not use the local roads to avoid paying that. A regular sales tax certificate isn't blocking you from that. Tax codes are complicated. \r\n\r\nEither way the issue is the invoice looks UN-realistic. As somebody who worked in this industry for 18+ years I have seen my share of price gauging and value driving. A hefty repair bill on a decent car can make the buyer feel secure, as most wear items are already changed, so it is a good car. Well, take it with a huge grain of salt. Rebuild isn't always a permanent fix :-) \r\n\r\nYou need to get a reference for that shop. Check reviews on them by customers, suppliers. What kind of cars do they normally service ? etc. etc. An older Independent shop who works on vintage cars and has a good reputation will not risk cheating because it isn't worth it for them. A small corner shop who mostly works on walk-in customers cars a different story. Good luck if you are bidding, amazing looking car, really. The car was very complete and a good starting point, the body was straight and clean, the interior together, with a 5 speed to boot. The repair process took well over a year and many hours spent on the phone with Steve at DMC Texas. Almost every part was purchased from DMC Texas. The invoices are real spelling and grammar mistakes and all. I charge my sales department like they are any other customer we work for minus sales tax. They get charged a full labor rate and parts mark up like you or I would (as most dealerships do). I am not, nor am I pretending to be a Delorean expert. I have a great lead tech with over 20 years experience on almost every brand of car you can imagine and I feel we have presented a nice running driving Delorean to our sales department to sell on to you the motoring public. No major modifications are needed to the frame or engine cradle which is the frame to stuff a lsx engine into the delorean. One only needs to commission an adapter plate and a custom flywheel. Motor mounts will need to be fabricated as in most swaps, and then of course the wiring and plumbing. \r\n\r\nYou utilize the original 5spd manual. People use the same transmission in gt40 kit cars if they handle that abuse it'll be fine for a car show cruiser.
