They were \"worm-and-roller,\" or \"recirculating ball\" type. Which, as you might recall, required a great deal more turns lock-to-lock, the product of a lower gear ratio. That's why you see people frantically sawing away at those old wheels during spirited driving, and the wheel recentering itself as the driver loosens his grip and the wheel spins madly back to center. Observe an XK120 being driven quickly through the twisties and you'll know what I mean.\r\n\r\nModern power steering systems rely upon hydraulic (and now, electric) assist, which allows a much higher gear ratio and fewer turns required. Disable that power assist and then tell me how easily you can park that car!
