The first one I did was with my dad in about 1977. He had done some PCA auto-crossing with his 911 and knowing how hard he was on the clutch he sure wasn't going to let me do THAT. So we ran a 1975 BMW 530i with a automatic. To this day I can distinctly remember sitting on the line waiting for the start of my first run and being so nervous that my legs were actually shaking - so much so that I could hardly keep my foot on the brake. My driving style on that first run was something along the lines of aiming for a cone, running it over and then lighting up inside tire (open diff) on my way to kill the next cone. When I came in, dad looked at me with his half smile chuckle and said something along the lines of \"I think you just took TWENTY THOUSAND miles off those rear tires!\". I doubt the course workers were as amused as he was. He then patiently explained the concept that sometimes you have to slow down to go faster. And sure enough, both my cone killing and my times went down run by run. Unfortunately that was the only time we got to do it together - he passed away shortly after.\nI ran various other events there thru about 1982-3. Once was with a Mazda RX3 wagon with a automatic. They felt so sorry for me that they actually let me run it on studded snow tires!\nMore often was with my red RX2 sedan or a friends \"prepped\" RX2. Then there was the time that I worked all night prepping my twin engined Margay lay-down kart. Boy was I bummed when I arrived Saturday morning and was told that nothing \"without suspension\" was allowed. But back then they would leave the cones up for Sunday's event. Not to be denied my days fun, I came back in the evening to make a few runs. That's when I learned that a 1000cc Moto Guzzi is not very well suited to a parking lot autocross course! Before I left I did reset my killed cones. Our first Auto-X was at SIR and used the front straightway, I was allowed to drive my father 69 Saab Sonett ll, hit a LARGE cone at 80MPH sideways and thought I Killed the car, lucky for me no damage. Auto-xing kept my dad and I, Friend's, partner, and racer till he passed away a few years ago. I'm sorry you loss your father before you had the chance I did. They shook on it. But the deal was made before he tried to get in it. Many will attest to the technique required to get in one, but at 6'2\" and with a cranky back, he simply could not get in. He was never one to go back on a handshake but he was noticeably relieved when the understanding sell let him out of the deal.\n2 - I've wanted one ever since.\n3 - From the mid 70's thru the late '80s I worked at the South Seattle Auto Auction (shop sweeper to lot boy to General Sales Manager). From '81 on we were right down the road from Boeing Aerospace. There once was a Europa in the salvage pool with a big hole in the drivers door but otherwise intact. I was working the main lanes and just couldn't get to the salvage sale. It sold for about $600! The Europa was one of the very first cars designed in a wind tunnel and has a drag coefficient of .29 which was insanely, record shatteringly low for its day and even good for today's modern aerodynamic standards. The lines while awkward in its day make perfect sense today which is why the design has aged well...and actually grown on people who formally disliked the design. His cars were more like airplanes on four wheels...light, aerodynamic, and ergonomically balanced. Sit inside one and it even feels like a cockpit of a plane. That said -- they are wonderful and engaging but they are fragile. An enthusiast-owned Porsche 911 that's been used for track days is one thing, because they're incredibly robust cars. \n Europas ... if driven hard (or even just on lousy roads), the frame is easily put out of alignment. Do the nicks and knocks on this one reflect any little shunts on track days? If so the body attachment points would want checking as well as the frame straightness. The rear suspension mounting points (and sometimes the front ones) can develop stress flaws. A starting point is to face the car head-on, and look to see whether the nose is parallel to the ground (they usually aren't). Measure under each end of the front crossmember, to the ground, same at the rear. Driving, at highway speed, on a level smooth road, tromp hard on the gas, then come off the throttle -- see if the car changes direction (they often do). I've had one straight one, and a half-dozen well-cared-for ones that actually weren't straight (over the course of almost 40 years). They can still be great fun even when not completely straight but it's just something to be aware of. Door attachment pins and other similar lightly stressed items tend to get badly sloppy. If you think of it as a kit car, and can live with that kind of dynamic, you'll be fine ... if you expect 911 robustness, don't go here. If you are tall, you can make a lot more room in the cabin by simply de-upholstering the seat. Particularly the headrests, which crowd your head forward and make the inside feel smaller in there than it actually is. Install a manual override switch for the cooling fan (very important) and check condition of the cooling lines. Not good highway cars, mainly because of the limited visibility, but for a good back road tear they're unbeatable, so long as everything stays attached. I bought it from the original owner who was a college friend of my parents. I believe the car was purchased from a Lotus dealer in San Jose, California. The car made it's way to Oregon with the original owner in the late 70's. The car later made it's way to Idaho in the late 80's but was never registered there. I bought it in the early 90's and auto crossed it for several years with the Oregon Region SCCA and managed to win a regional A stock championship with the car. I did track days with the car and that was a catalyst for selling the car to buy a Lola Formula Ford. That nick in the rear fender was there when I bought it, not sure what the cause was. No accidents or shunts during my ownership.\n\nThis is one of the cars I regret selling but am not in a position to pick it back up. Never had a problem with 'em. I really think that they have been unjustly demonized simply because they were the \"federalized\" carb at the time. I've seen them switched out with SU's and of course Weber's (which require a different head) both of which are more adjustable but they are more fiddly as well. The advantages of changing them out are not really justified IMO. The Strombergs also were easier to tune with the lower compression ratio of 9.5:1 vs. the European 10.3:1 ratio. It wasn't the Stromberg's fault for being down to 113 bhp vs the Euro spec 126 bhp. Raise the compression ratio on an American spec with Strombergs to 10.3:1 and the difference would be minute.
