The casting numbers in side of the block are not helpful as the same casting number was used for several model years, however the casting date that is just above the casting numbers do carry some significance. The casting date should be just prior to the scheduled production date by maybe a month or two or three. In the photos I can see the day and year (22 & 68) the block was cast but not the month, that number is hidden behind the exhaust manifold. At the very top of the build sheet (or broadcast sheet) you will find first a sequence number and then the next three digits which are also the first three digits of the shipping order number are the scheduled production date. I THINK your build sheet says 404 meaning April 4th, but the numbers are somewhat obscured by the picture frame. Moving on to the D440 stamped on the flat plate on the front of the motor, the \"D\" confirms that this 440 motor was originally placed in a 1968 model year car. The ultimate numbers matching proof however will be car's VIN number hand stamped in the TOP of both the transmission and engine block more to the drivers side and almost directly below the oil sending unit. These numbers on the transmission & engine will be right next to one another, so on the bell-housing where it mates to the motor and on the motor where it mates to the bell-housing. All, I will repeat that, ALL 3 speed automatic transmissions mated to 375 HP 440 engines got the charger's VIN number stamped in them in the location just mentioned, and it is my belief that all RT chargers built at this time got the VIN number stamped in the engine block as well. I will get plenty of arguments on my last statement as the 1968 model year was indeed the transition year for Dodge attempting to stamp engine blocks (and didn't stamp all) but we aren't talking about a plain Jane 318 or 383 car here we're talking about a real RT car built in what looks like April.
