Somewhat amazing lack of oil leaks for a BMW I-6 engine, speaks to a pretty well maintained engine. If you do it yourself the timing belt on these isn't super tough or expensive. I would plan on $400-600 in parts and say 5-6 hours of labor for a reasonably talented mechanic. You will want to replace the water pump,T-stat, hoses, radiator (the plastic tanks get brittle), belts, and since you will have them off anyway the cap and rotor. Easy access to parts from any of the big parts houses, no real need to go to the more expensive specialist places. Once you get the radiator out of the way there is plenty of room and the job isn't at all technically difficult.\r\n\r\nThe eta engine is a pretty good match for the 5 series chassis, the torque helps move the car up to speed pretty quickly in city driving without revving too high. This car would obviously be more fun with a 5 speed but c'est la vie. Quite low miles, I had one with about the same back in circa 2003 and considered it pretty low back then.
