Back then Montana's speed limit was \"reasonable and prudent for conditions\" in the daytime. I had read an article in Car and Driver which noted over 100 mph would probably warrant a traffic stop. Cruising west of Billings I had the cruise control set at 98mph. I noticed a State Patrolman in the rear view mirror and figured I was ok at 98mph. Seeing my Colorado plates he came by in the left lane and waved! Heck, this is my kind of place! Great memories of a car that that could cruise serenely at speed, super comfortable for 14 to 16 hour drives, and still return 30+mpg. GLWTA! For the next 8 years and every 10,000 km, Mr Carlier took his car to the same dealer for annual service as highlighted in the service manual.\r\n\r\nIn 2002, as Mr Carlier was now retired, he moved to his country house in Brittany. There and starting in April 2003, as the car shows 43K miles (70K km), he had his car serviced at the nearby St. Malo BMW dealership, again at every 10,000 km intervals until the last entry on the service manual at 65K miles(104,900 km) on October 31st 2011. As per the dealer\u2019s stamps on the service manual, Mr Carlier did not drive much between 2008 and 2011, registering just 2,700 miles (3,727 km) in those 3 years.\r\n\r\nMr Carlier passed away sometimes in 2016. I have one last invoice under his name for 2 tires dated November 6th 2015.\r\n\r\nAs Mr Carlier\u2019s family was settling his estate, they decided to sell the house with all of its content including the BMW in the garage !\r\nThe person who bought the house had no interest in keeping the car. In late December 2017, he had the oil changed and the other main fluids checked, then just 1 km and 1 week later took it to his mechanic for a check-up. At this time, he had the engine ECU repaired, the pre-warming relay changed, installed a new Bosch battery and rear brake pads.\r\n\r\nWhen the car arrived in the US, I found copies of Mr Carlier's driver's licence, national ID card as well as the original registration paper under his name in the trunk's tool kit area. Consumes about 34 MPG at 75 MPH (photo on the highway). \nFor those who know the area, I drove it from North Orlando to Sarasota, then took the Sunshine Skyway Bridge to St. Petersburg, then back to Orlando. Excellent comfort and easy drive with over a third of the gas tank left pulling into my driveway after this trip!\nAll electrical accessories function as they should including the outside temperature display, cruise control, electric windows, etc.. I must add that living in Florida, AC efficiency is a huge factor. Recorded temperatures in August on position 1 while driving 60 MPH went down to 33 degree (!!!!!!! If temperatures are sub freezing down to about 15 degrees, it typically takes somewhere between 10 and 15 seconds for the glow plug light to extinguish itself in my W124 diesel Mercedes. Then it will fire right up. The same held true for the other W124 diesels I've owned over the years. The current one has a block heater which really helps reduce the glow plug time and stress on cold starts if I plug it in overnight. I believe the block heaters can still be purchased for the W124, not sure about this variety of E34 BMW. The Citroen CX turbo diesel that I owned didn't care much for sub freezing temperatures and would start after a good 30 - 45 seconds of letting the glow plugs heat up and even then tended to stumble and clatter around until it warmed up after a few minutes. But this being a relatively modern turbo diesel BMW, I don't believe cold starts should present an issue as long as the glow plugs are all working correctly.\n\nHaving said all that, I would not trust my diesel Mercedes to start in sub 0 degree weather without it being plugged in overnight. Come to think of it, there's really not too many cars that sound happy cold starting in those sort of temperatures.... but at least I know a gas powered FI car will usually fire and idle if the battery is healthy.\n\nSo I guess it depends on how far upstate you are and what the mercury reads? Good battery, good glow plugs, the right weight oil, and fuel from a station that does a fairly high volume of business like a truck stop (this will ensure your fuel is properly mixed for the temperature. If you have straight diesel fuel for the summer and try to start in the winter, forget it). A plug-in block heater eliminates cold start issues (unless your fuel isn't right).
