They are standard faire for Type 9 gearbox swaps that are popular for MG, Triumph and Austin Healy/Spridgit. \r\n\r\nAlso, if you like to have 5 useful ratios, you can get a \"long 1st\" gear set that gives a longer 1st that is useful past 15 mph, and a shorter 3rd to eliminate the gap. Those items can be added to an earlier block though -- in fact I've done it to a 1500 pre-crossflow using main caps from a junked race engine (subsequently align-bored) and a new set of lifters (which unfortunately were not all precisely the same diameter, forcing my machinist to work a little harder). \r\n\r\nI'm curious about how the synchronous carb feels in around-town driving. This carb may be the hot setup for acceleration from mid-rpm but I'm wondering how well it maintains the low-rpm partial throttle response that one gets from a progressive carb due to its ability to maintain higher gas velocity under those conditions.\r\n\r\nUnless later cars were heavier, this car should weigh under 1500 lbs. Standard weight on a Series V 4/4 was 1450 and mine, which had aluminum bodywork, weighed only 1330 lbs. I doubt the 1600s were much heavier. It's reasonable to get 130_+hp out of this engine (more with dual Dell'Ortos or Weber DCOEs) and still have tractable power production for street use.\r\n\r\nRe: those little bitty E93a 1172 sidevalve engines... So, the scenario is not really possible, and even less probable. \n\nNow, if the Morgan came in from the UK or perhaps Europe, and someone had used a different VIN (which would have to be replaced on the chassis to get through \"verification\" by both customs and the DMV), maybe you could get away with it. Lots of guys with Minis have done this using the paperwork from an older car, but for this US based Morgan... Not a chance. AND, you would still have to go through emissions unless you got the car a '75 or earlier title... Good luck with that. \n\nLook, if you want a new Morgan, you can get one as a \"component car\", completely Morgan with the correct engine, gearbox and your favorite options directly from Morgan through one of their dealers, and it will be legal in CA, and likely emissions exempt. $90K should do it. It will look just like this one, but with 325 HP... a little wider, but MUCH faster.\n\nAs for \"backdating\" anything, this one doesn't need any work at all. It appears as it should, without the external side repeaters or marker lights. It's fine just as it is. It doesn't even have a padded dash top roll or the goofy head rests.
