If you lust after a Healey that you can take to shows and display with the bonnet open, it will cost a fair bit to make that happen here. A complete color change done correctly requires an engine and transmission removal along with removal of the wiring harness, all the fenders and doors and the windscreen as well as assorted bits and bobs. Labor intensive and you haven't even got to the paint prep yet. Even an exterior respray presents problems as the fenders need to be loosened in order to remove the stainless steel beading, otherwise new paint will peel at the fender join. About the only variable on a Healey restoration will be how much welding needs to be done\u2014and pretty much all Healeys need welding, unless it is a time warp car. So, I would start with a car that is a little ratty because the entry price will be lower than this, and you will do almost the same amount of work on this nicer car as you would a ratty car. My own BJ8 is presently getting a show quality restoration. After 39 years of family ownership, it was ratty. Other than a fair amount of welding work that was done, restoring it is no different than restoring the car in this auction. And yes, it is very expensive to do. I owned and restored a BJ8 in the early 90's. The forward in the restoration manual said two things that made me chuckle: make sure you install the engine before you align any body panels as the engine will pull everything out of alignment as the chassis flexes and the floors and undercarriage of the big Healey's rarely rust as the engine leaks so much oil that the chassis receives natural rust protection. Neither of these proved to be really true (well, maybe somewhat true). I loved my Healey once I finished the resto and I fit just fine, but will admit that with the top (hood) up it was coffinesque. These are fun cars when maintained and driven regularly.
