An Aston Martin Volante roadster was running nose to tail with a Porsche 928 S4, lap after lap. I was watching from inside the carousel, this in the days before all the barriers and fencing that made spectating an industrial park experience. The AM lost it exiting and spun hard into the inside embankment. As the dust and steam settled the intrepid driver had to hop out as the doors were jammed shut. He jauntily popped open the trunk, grabbed a beer from the cooler and laughingly joined the corner workers to wait for the flatbed. When it was pulled onto the truck the front wheels were flopping and the anti-sway bar dragging on the ground. I have owned a manual and auto Volante. This one looks really nice.\nThe 5 speed makes a little rumbling noise at idle, it stops when you put the clutch down. Nothing to worry about. The transmission from the factory is a ZF-1, the retrofits are usually Tremec 5-speed. This car looks like it has stainless big bore exhaust.\nSpeaking of retrofit, for those who care, this car is sporting US airbox and stainless or chrome bumpers. The US cars after 1979 had the ugly but more protective 5 mph rubber bumpers.\nThe bumpers on this car are a huge and expensive step up from the rubber bumpers, but do not look like factory chrome bumpers. \nThe rear end looks like it has Euro valence below the license plate but again the bumper appears to be after market.\nThat said, these cars are really practical classics. Room for four, top goes down, big boot, and reasonably dependable.\nPre purchase inspection for these high end units is highly recommended. Beyond the usual, look for streaks below the weep holes on the block below each cylinder. The Adwest power steering racks are unobtainium, cost about $10K (or more) if it goes south. Alloy body on steel frame causes galvanic corrosion, check the sills for hidden sins.\nValues are all over the map. Rubber bumper auto car with over 100K miles auctioned at 80K two months ago. Bonhams Amelia last month auctioned a 1986 on BBS wheels 5 speed that came back from Mid East- the car had recommissioning needs yet still sold for $190K. It's definitely a US car as it has the twin smog air pumps and carb enclosure, both designed to help it pass US smog requirements. The bumpers were replaced (as mentioned, the rear not fully converted to the euro style) but the 5 speed is definitely original and verified by the code in the engine number - the \"LFM\" stands for \"Lead Free Manual\" indicating it was intended for markets with lead free fuel and with a manual tranny. The ZF Box is a bit agricultural but solid. Back in the day it was one of the few manual boxes that could handle the torque. It was also used in the Bora, Pantera, and a few other V8 engined European exotics. I owned an original 5 speed Volante for years but sold it largely due to the semi-annual nightmare trying to get it smogged. These engines run best with the mixture a little rich so it would pass but only if it was leaned to the point of barely running then retuned to run properl after it was smogged. When tuned by someone who really knows webers this has plenty of power, at least in the context of cars of that era. This will be happiest somewhere without tough smog regs. That\u2019s why the rear end looks so big on this car. The license plate should be below the bumper and be flanked by 2 taillights. Also, nice to see a Weber- carburated car. They went to fuel injection during 1986 except on the Vantages and X-Packs which retained the Webers and higher bhp.
