Knowing it was a hardened and if I remember correctly it was a tuftrided crank I took a chance on the crank being OK and after buying new bearings and sundry other small parts it became along with my 1963 Porsche 356B the two family cars. I was often away from home on training courses at the time so it was nice to have two cars capable of cruising at high speed on the few motorways in the UK at the time and even more fun on the back roads in either car. Only downside to the BMW was the fuel consumption. I used to joke that you could watch the fuel gauge needle move down once you got on the loud pedal. As I remember it only got 18 mpg (imperial gallon)\r\nAlong with the 356 Porsches the best car I ever owned for comfort and handling. Regarding the miles, I know BAT and maybe even the seller might be reluctant to claim the 45K km as original but based on the condition, especially the interior with untracked dash and pristine seats and door panels, I would bet money that's the case.\r\n\r\nI have a 65 base 1800 with what I believe are 76K original miles with the same interior. I have records back to 1967 with California registration and black plates. I believe it was sold new in the LA area, part of the Max Hoffmann dealer network.\r\n\r\nAside from one of the original 200 TISA versions, of which very few remain, this has to be one of the finest NKs on the planet. Back in 1982-83 I answered an ad in the Recycler for a set of 1800ti carbs, manifolds, linkage and air canister for sale in Hollywood. When I got there I noticed no less than three 1800 NKs, two 1800Tis and one 1800 parked in the driveway to a bungalow. To enter the bungalow through the side door you had to step on to the hood of one of the cars. I was amazed that hood was still in good shape. After I paid the seller $100 for the carbs and hardware he gave me one of the cars which was missing the engine head. I told him I can't take the car as I was just 17 years old at the time and didn't have the resources to get it home and store it. The car had that Red / Black interior in excellent shape. I really wanted the seats. And, the seller told me I can remove the interior and take it with me, if I wished. I only removed the front seats, thinking they would fit in my 1600-2. When I got home I was dismayed as they were too wide for my car. But, my best friend, who was restoring an Oldsmobile Cutlass was glad to take them off my back. He installed them in his red Olds. I wish I can roll the clock back and take that 1800ti home for just the price of a tow. This was the case for other German cars such as the Porsche 911. Once you regrind the crank, there is really no way to duplicate the factory surface hardening process in the US as it has been banned by the EPA. Glock gun barrels made overseas are gardened in a similar fashion, but the ones made in the US are not. Some people send out their cranks to get surface hardened through a process where the crank is subjected to high temp gas. But, this risks the crank to distortion. The immersion process is at relatively low temp. \n\nAfter an oil pump failure in my 69 1600-2 all of my rod bearings were beaten by my crank into what appeared as copper foil. When I removed the bearings I was surprised the crank was not scored. I just replaced them and drove that motor for 100K miles. \n\nAs far as the 356 is concerned, when I went off to college in 1983 I used my $500 BMW 1600-2 as basic transportation while my best friend purchased a 1963 356B model in very good condition for $2,500. We took turns carpooling and commuting to school in those cars through dense traffic in Los Angeles, clocking about 50 miles each day. The BMW proved more practical and fuel efficient with its single barrel Solex. I've tried the side draft Solexes on my car at the time. But, they decreased mpgs from 25mpg to 15mpg. The 1800ti does guzzle fuel, yielding only 14mpg - 15pg in the city. It's capable of 20mpg on the highway according to factory claims. Replacing the twin carbs with the single Solex increases mpgs significantly. With hose disconnected your current distributor works, but I wonder if the curve is optimum or the same as the curve on the mechanically advanced 1800ti distributor ? \n\nI'm not trying to find faults with your really nice car. But, I notice these details. I too run the incorrect distributor on my 2.0L which powers my early 67 1600. I'm using the early \"048\" 1600 distributor, as the car falls flat on it face with every early \"045\" 2.0L distributor I've installed. Those are 2nd oversize 84.46mm pistons in 9.5:1 compression ratio for the 1800Ti. As few people are building these small bore early 1800 and 1800ti motors, there is little demand for the pistons. So, most of the original piston manufacturers are probably no longer manufacturing them. Parts warehouses suppliers just dumped their left over NOS parts associated with these cars at discount prices on e-bay etc. But, now, there is hardly anything left out there. I thought I saw those very same Nural pistons for the 1800Ti available through e-bay from Sweden or one of the Scandinavian countries for about $250, probably at some time during the past five years. That was a great deal. By the time I decided I wanted them someone else beat me to it. And, I think I'm looking at them in your pic. And, this car is a snapshot into that era. Introduced during 1964 the1800Ti represents BMW's first sports sedan with bumped up compression ratio and twin carbs, yielding an additional 20hp. The TISA variant took this theme to a much more radical level. But, for all practical purposes the 1800Ti represented BMW's flagship sports sedan at the time. Yes, in 1965 these cars had the single piece driveshaft and the funky transmission which also enclosed the shift linkage. But, by 1967 the factory was outfitting these cars with the more familiar 232. The 1800Ti is a close cousin of the 1600 and 1600-2 which borrowed its \"118\" head from the 1800Ti. The \"118\" head was first introduced on the 1800Ti during 1965. Before that it was equipped with the \"116\" head which had the simple wage shape combustion chamber, inspired by Alfenbeck's motorcycle engine designs. These cars also have the hollow camshaft where the cam was lobed from within through holes in the cam lobes. They use the 200mm clutch first introduced on the first M10 in 1962, the 1500. This clutch and flywheel were also used on the 1600, 1600-2 and 1600ti. The 1800, 1800ti and 1600ti pressure pates had slightly stiffer coil springs. By 1965 the more familiar \"H\" beam profile connecting rods were being phased in. But, earlier versions of the NKs, including the 1964 era 1800ti had the smooth blunt sword edge profile. The 1800 and 1800Ti were the first to use the 80mm stroke, but the crank resembles the shorter stroke 71mm crank in that it is not fully counter-weighed. At some point during TISA production BMW introduced the 8 bolt fully counter-weiged crank, which was also included into the 2.0L. You can build an 1800 with the heavier 2.0L crank, but its counterproductive in that the 1800 flywheel is quite a bit lighter than that of the 2.0L. And, you would slow down the motor. For some of you guys building a high performance 2.0L motor with light forged pistons and an aluminum flywheel, this early 80mm crank might be the ticket in that it is quite a bit lighter, just an idea. \r\n\r\nThe 1800Ti has the tight 4.11 long neck diff which is superior to the later short neck diffs. It holds more oil and runs cooler. It's the same unit used on the 1600-2, but in comparison to the 02s the overall gearing translates to higher speeds at any given RPM due to the much taller 14\" tires. \r\n\r\nThis appears to be a really nice and solid car, representing BMW's first sports sedan. Well, Alpina was born when its founder outfitted an otherwise stock 1500 with Weber side drafts and a custom air intake filter assembly in 1963, to boost output by 10hp and bring it on par with the newly introduced 1800. When yoy take into consideration that some unrestored, but otherwise 1600s have sold in the low 20k range, 2002Tis are going in the 40K-50K range etc. these early cars should fetch just as much. The build quality is excellent and better than that of the 02s. I was always amazed at how the doors opened and closed flawlessly even on the cars sitting on makeshift stilts at the yards. I'm sure the solid and rigid body coupled with a door frame design contribute to this. The sad part is that all those cars were crushed, intact or nearly intact, many in very good condition with little to no visible rust.
