The Gremlin wasn't going to cut it on its own, so the Pacer came about. \r\n\r\n\"The roominess of a large car in a compact\" or something similar was the slogan. One TV spot even had a deli owner constructing a very long submarine sandwich in the Pacer's back seat, while an assistant drove him to the event they were catering and running late to. The width of the interior was able to accommodate the lengthy slab of bread on his lap. \r\n\r\nAMC even had a jingle: \"Wide...small was never this WIDE...\" And to ease access to the rear seat, the passenger side door was longer than the driver's side one.\r\n\r\nThe design served the brand well, and they even added a station wagon model at one point. That year, the hood center and front grill was bumped for style. It had opening rear quarter windows. That car was comfy and roomy. I think I paid $5,800.00 . \r\n\r\nI really liked the car and regularly suffered poking for my folly purchase. I had owned three AMC/Ramblers up to then and knew their good reliability and practicality. \r\n\r\nUnfortunately wagon did not have AC and with all the glass it was a hot car during the summer. It did have power steering and an am radio but no power windows. \r\n\r\nIt was a gas hog for a compact car at the time of the second wave of gasoline price increases. I would wait in long hot lines for a weekly gasoline fill-up. \r\n\r\nI learned to run the heat as a power vent in the Pacer. \r\n\r\nYep, I soon traded it for a 4-speed diesel rabbit in 1980 and got 40 mpg and more jealous jabs for that car purchase. At least the VW's windows cranked down and the sun roof opened for ventilation. But the Pacer was the classier and more comfortable, if not quirky styled, auto. It started as a 75 Pacer with the same 258 single barrel engine as this car. Second day I owned it I took it on a stretch of highway that included a 2-mile 6% uphill grade. I watched the speedo needle move from 70, to 60, to 50, and keep on slowing until the point a big rig pulling a double-trailer pulled over and passed me the left, giving me a glance that suggested he considered me a waste of oxygen.\r\n\r\nThe next day I took out a tape measure and measured the engine compartment for an LS1, which amazingly fit considering the Pacer was originally designed for a rotary engine.\r\n\r\nPut it this way, ain't no big rigs passing my Pacer today. The ultimate sleeper.\r\n\r\nBut got to say this Pacer restored to brilliant blue over white looks stunning and I would seriously consider buying it if I didn't have to consider the added cost of a divorce when my wife saw it in the driveway. I didn't realize how rare that car would eventually be since it was not only an X but it was a four speed and it had the Levi's interior. Yes, you could get Levi's in a Pacer. I AXed that car in a D/FW club called Equipe Rapide and would always be chasing either a guy in a BMW 2002 or a guy in a Mazda RX4. I came in 2nd to one of them (or 3rd to both) too many times to remember. And never had one problem with it!\r\n\r\nThis car is nicely equipped but really puzzling. With the D/L package it should have the fake woodgrain on the dash on each side of the speedo and door pulls above the arm rest. But it does have tilt (something I value as I always tilt the wheel up everytime I get out of a car so equipped) and I believe the \"Visibility Group\", which I think included the nicer dome light with the reading lamps, intermittent wipers and maybe a day/night mirror, This car looks like it has all three, can't really tell on the inside mirror. But it does have intermittent wipers, a really nice option that, for all you \"youngins\", wasn't standard in virtually all cars all through the 70's.\r\n\r\nAs for the engine and power. In mid '76 AMC started offering the 258 with a 2 barrel carb and, believe it or not it, it made a huge difference. An easy upgrade if the new buyer wants. And for those that don't know, a 4.0 litre head WILL bolt right on the 258 and then true MPFI can be installed from a Jeep. The only issue being the need for a crank sensor for the computer since a 4.0 litre uses a sensor on the flywheel. How cool would that be! \r\n\r\nOne last thing and I'll shut up. The new owner should make it a priority (IMHO) to replace the door strikers. I can see the passenger side is missing the plastic/nylon busing that goes around the shaft of the striker. I would bet the drivers door needs it also. With that bushing missing the door will rattle because the latch inside the door can't firmly grasp the striker due to the smaller diameter. This is an EXTREMELY easy fix as the strikers are available from most all of the AMC vendors. And if you don't insist on originality you can go on Amazon or the two big chain auto suppliers and order Dorman part #38428. This striker is a solid shaft design without the bushing and, despite what some might say, will work perfectly. I have them on all of my AMCs and the doors close great and don't rattle. Not sure of the official paint name but, regardless, it was beautiful. It even had slotted aluminum mag wheels for heaven's sake! Luggage rack. A/C. Center storage console. Yep, it had all that, too! He purchased it from Joe Erdelac AMC in Cleveland, Ohio. Dad was an engineer with SOHIO (Standard Oil of Ohio) and they would purchase various and sundry vehicles to be used as part of the test fleet. One of those cars was a white 1975 Pacer which Dad brought down from Detroit. We were very impressed. So impressed, as it turns out, that Dad purchased the '78. In the meantime Dad purchased, for me, a 1979 AMC Spirit with a V-8, manual transmission, and no A/C. I then relocated to Houston (\"boomtown\") at the age of 24 in my A/C-less Spirit. Things went okay until I crashed the Spirit (details intentionally omitted here). I needed a car. Dad being Dad, he kindly offered me the Pacer. I took it. I blacked out the chrome trim and installed faux sheepskin seat covers. Nothing else, except for the Pirelli P77 tires I eventually installed out of need. That 258 ran and ran and ran without a lick of problems. When I decided to put myself in a new 1984 VW GTI, Dad took the Pacer back from me, ripped out the sheepskins (\"How could you cover up such beautiful upholstery?!\"), and drove it for another couple of years. When he finally decided to let it leave the family it had over 100,000 trouble -free miles on the clock. As an aside, again with details omitted here, the girl of my dreams at the time, and I, both gained some substantial experience of the loving kind in that Pacer since we had nowhere else to go for the experience. Memories, they're really all that matter. My Pacer provided many memories and was also a rock-solid means of transportation.
