That manifold has to be one of the worst designs ever, very restrictive and with the very hot cat converter snuggled up right below the Stromberg. The carb also had its own issues. The loss of power with the Stromberg-cat setup was quite shocking at the time. The MGB went from having adequate power and loads of torque and great handling to being a wheezy, slow and ill-handling (due to the raised ride height - also a reaction to U.S. bumper height rules) anachronism in only a few years. To be brutally honest, the MGB became a slug to drive.\n\nThe removal of the restrictive intake/exhaust manifold + Stromberg and replacemant with the earlier, simpler S.U.s combined with the nice free flowing exhaust manifold and exhaust system that goes along with them really restore much of the \"lost\" power and flexibility of the engine in the MGB. It's a dramatic change for the better, assuming of course that the S.U.s are properly set up and synchronized (not difficult at all, contrary to what some will tell you!).\n\nI can't really criticize MG or British Leyland for the changes made to the MGB in the early/middle '70s however; North America and the U.S. specifically were their biggest market by far for the MGB and they needed the profits that the MGB provided, as BL was already bleeding cash from every orifice by the mid 70s. The introduction of emissions and crash regulations in the U.S. forced them to do some radical re-engineering to allow the MGB to remain on sale in the U.S. Even though MGB enthusiasts (myself included) were quite horrified at the time by the \"degradation\" (as we saw it) of our beloved MGB and would never have bought one, the late 70s versions of the car sold very well in the U.S. and Canada. The \"rubber bumper\" MGBs were, to many new buyers, an inexpensive, small and easy to drive convertible boulevard cruiser and a nice daily driver alternative to a Volkswagen Beetle or a (just coming to market) Japanese econo-box. We like to lower them about an inch (cheap and easy for the first inch, any more is a bit more involved) re-curve the distributor (replace with a re-curved Lucas 25D if there's one laying around), build a good set of HS4's (AUD 405 or 465 are my favorites), and ceramic coat the early stock cast iron MOWOG exhaust manifold leading to the early two into one down pipe. This seems to provide a good running, good handling, subtlety different appearing late model B. If I were to guess, I'd say the above listed engine mods ad probably 20 - 25 hp to the low compression engine. If you are lucky enough to have one with the Overdrive gearbox, you now have a decent performing weekend cruiser. \r\nI have found that a car set up like that seems to bring around $4K in the market that I live in. Unfortunately, this poor little car is going to need more than just the easy fix. If the devil is in the details, this car is full of devilment. Sure, the carb swap is nice, but as I said, it is only part of the solution. The minor electric problems are just time consuming. The over spray, from a poor re-spray, can be dealt with, but is time consuming. Refreshing the suspension is not particularly expensive, but time consuming, \r\nAll in all a very familiar story from a car that was owned by an enthusiast, and simply allowed to deteriorate from passive neglect. \r\nGood Luck with the sale.
