All of the lights work except one high beam bulb is out (we would have replaced it if we knew in advance, sorry for missing this). Even the lights on the fender tops work, showing turn signals. The Clock doesn't work. I cannot explain why Cadillac waited until the following year to punch the 390 to 429 cubic inches. \n\nHowever what was really new on Cadillac (and most big GM cars for 1963) was its \"re-heat\" air conditioning system that integrated heat and air conditioning in one system. Previous GM in-dash systems used a separate heater and air conditioner. \n\nThe new system allows refrigerated air to be re-heated before discharge into the passenger compartment for better demisting of the windshield and comfort on damp, cool days. This system was in preparation for Cadillac's \"Comfort Control\" introduced for 1964, which essentially automated the previous years re-heat system with electro-mechanical thermostatic control. Lincoln & Chrysler would introduce similar systems in 66 and 68 respectively. \n\nMany Cadillac folks prefer the 1963 model with its more reliable non-automated air conditioner and taller fins. However both are some of the best Cadillac cars Cadillac put together. \n\nI learned this one day when my friend Pete found an original 1963 Park Avenue, the short deck version Cadillac sold for several years when it believed there were customers for a stubby Cadillac. \n\nIt was a low mileage car that had rusted out bumper ends and fender dog legs. Though we brought a trailer we determined it would drive home and I was the lucky captain. \n\nThe car ran unbelievably well given how it looked. I put my foot in it and left the exhaust system at the entrance ramp. If I was given the choice between 63-64 Cadillac, I would choose 1963. I like a little bit more fin on the body as the side view of the 64 is a little plain, and I certainly like the four speed HydraMatic better than ST400. There is a transition going on in the 64 Cadillac models as far as automatic transmissions are concerned because the ST400 is being phased in in some 64 models, a change between a transmission with a fluid coupling and split torque and a conventional three speed (think of torque flight) torque converter transmission.
