My '67 coupe has been my daily driver since 1975 and my '65 coupe was bought new by my Dad. He sold it to me for $1.00 before he died in 1971. I remember that he bought the coupe because it was $100 cheaper than the 4-door. I'm glad he did. Regarding the engine code - - both of my cars show 4968 cast into the block, as does this one. I would not think the codes would be different between the 122 and 123. I am curious about the red-sprayed spark plugs. The narrative seems to be saying that the engine has not been rebuilt. Maybe someone just decided to re-spray the engine in-situ (?). In any case, c'mon, change the plugs. As for the \"clapping\" sound at idle - - yes, maybe the camshaft timing gear is giving up the ghost. The gear itself is some kind of hard fibre but it is attached to a steel core that fits to the camshaft. Sooner or later, the fibre separates from the steel and you start to hear the clapping sound. You usually get plenty of warning before they fully separate and leave you dead in the water, though. I've found them to be pretty robust, however, usually lasting well north of 100k miles before beginning to fail. Don't know what is causing this one to give out at 48k miles. This car had a rusted out frame/body but amazingly the quarter panels, hood, doors and trunk were all very good. The pre resto 123GT that you see in the first picture was not rough. Yes there was rust but it was very manageable and fixable. As for the car now I think there are definitely some personal taste things that are not original to the car. I like the new rims, roof antenna, underdash, retro sound stereo, extra driving lights etc. I know opinions very on the value of these additions I just hope I got it right enough for potential buyers to like it all and want to own the car.
