I particularly like the attention to detail throughout the build that is evident in the comprehensive picture gallery. No loose wires dangling, no plugged hoses (even the water heated manifold is plumbed), no bodged brackets waiting to slice your hand. . . and a tasteful selection of modifications. My only nit is that this car should be capable of way more than the 100 kph seen in the video. With the 3.1 diff this should be an excellent highway cruiser at an easy 75 mph. You do the mph to kph conversion.\r\n\r\nThe valve cover might be popular with the SCCA racers that like to pull a vacuum on the crankcase through various means. We have an aluminum valve cover on the race Mini that a friend that does CAD sheet metal work made for us. It looks like something you'd see on a Pro Stock drag racer. Cut from a single piece of aluminum and then folded and welded to a 1/4 inch thick bottom flange, it has a threaded oil filler cap equipped with an O-ring seal. The bottom was milled flat and seals to the head with a thin layer of sealant - we use Hondabond. Several SCCA racers have asked if duplicates are available because they pull enough crankcase vacuum to suck the gasket out of the standard and aftermarket types of valve covers. The friend did a cost analysis and decided it just wasn't worth his time to do a run of them. Ours has some very impressive dents in it from the inside out, but that's another story. If this flip top valve cover can create a proper seal to the head it might meet the SCCA guys' needs.\r\n\r\nAnd then there's Kansas. No offense to the state or the people, but I've driven across it too many times on I-70. That includes at least 20 times in the 997 Cooper on cross-country trips, 440 miles border-to-border in Kansas alone \u2013 usually in the summer. In 1970 Jaguar Jack did it from east to west in his E-Type in four hours including a gas stop. There's no way to do it that fast in a Mini, but the following year I decided to do it from west to east without stopping in Kansas. Filled the twin tanks to the brim in Burlington, Colorado and didn't stop until I was in Kansas City, Missouri about six and a half hours later. I\u2019ve had people brag about doing that in VW diesels but that just sounds boring.\r\n\r\nThis auction should be interesting to watch. That was a plus for me in that it had not been frankensteined. I tried to do tasteful and practical mods that make it fun and zippy and bit more comfy than the average mini and it can be driven and even showed without the same monetary investment of owning an original S. I like that. Its a classic car that still has value and can be enjoyed and even driven without the same fears of something next level. If I had an original S it would probably just sit in the garage most of time. I\u2019ll be taking the Cooper I bought in 1967; I\u2019ve had it at nine east coast meets, three west coast, and four east-meets-west meets. It was driven to all of those events except two E-M-W events that I took multiple Minis to. (On a mental count I\u2019ve also had nine other Minis at Mini Meets along with the old standby Cooper for a total of 25 entries. Trailer time or recruit drivers.) Most of those were before I started vintage racing in 1988 and the nine east and three west meets were all between 1976 and 1985. Other than the two E-M-W events in Denver this will be the shortest drive ever to a Mini Meet. And I haven\u2019t been to Snowmass since our honeymoon there in 1972! I\u2019m also hoping to run in the 60th anniversary vintage Mini race in Portland this September, and that will be the 10th special Mini race for me since they started in 1992 (e.g., Mini-Sprite Challenge, Can-Am Mini Challenge, etc.). I\u2019ve only missed one when my grandson was born, and all of those races involved a round trip tow of 2,600 to 3,600 miles using almost as old tow vehicles. Getting there is half the fun!\r\n\r\nConcerning the split brake systems, the current front-rear brake system also uses a master cylinder with different bore diameters \u2013 a stepped bore design. It shouldn\u2019t make any difference in a street car but I really didn\u2019t like that master cylinder for a race car \u2013 it has an odd feel to it at that intensity level. I\u2019ve also used the straight bore dual master cylinder from an Austin America (Don\u2019t know if that was ever used in a Mini) in a race car and it feels a lot better. I\u2019m putting an old race Mini back on the track for the Portland race and want to use a dual master cylinder without going to an aftermarket setup, however I found out recently that new AA dual masters went NLA a long time ago. No problem since I stocked up on a few when the local BL dealer dumped their NOS AA items 30-odd years ago. They were in the same box as the NOS cast iron 1275 water pumps I bought at the same time. Those will be saved for restoration projects but I\u2019m thinking that the two AA exhaust systems were a poor investment! As to the master cylinders, the dual set-up is a good idea, but I\u2019ve never had a problem with the single circuit type in either street or race Minis provided the systems are properly maintained. That includes true preventative maintenance; i.e., rebuilding or replacing everything on a schedule and not waiting for it to fail. Since everything in this Mini is virtually new I would have no qualms about the brake system.\r\n\r\nI\u2019m looking forward to the close on this auction, it should be busy. In the meantime I have to ask, why are folks so afraid of going fast in a Mini? Maybe it\u2019s because I started back when we were all young, stupid and invincible, but routine entertainment was trying to \u2018crack the ton\u2019 in a Mini. Or at least trying to get from point A to point B faster than anyone else. I am a lot more cautious nowadays and aggressive driving is reserved for the race track, but the inattentive driver in the Canyonero is a greater threat than how fast the Mini is travelling.
