We are very excited to bring this 500E to market. I (Derek Tam-Scott) personally have owned two of these cars, plus four R129 M119 500SL/SL500s (mechanically 90% identical, same engine, transmission, suspension other than the inclusion of SLS on the 500E, different differential ratio), a 400E, and two W124 E320s (the wagon one is this color and is in a couple of the photos with this car).\r\n\r\nI am very passionate about W124s and 500Es generally and always try to learn as much as I can about them. The configuration of this car really sets it apart. I'll post a separate comment with more detail about color breakdowns and transition here to a discussion about this specific car.\r\n\r\nIt was sold new in Chur, the largest town in the Graubunden canton of Switzerland. As you can see from the service stamps in the included service book, the car was almost always serviced slightly early (ah, the Swiss), and the abgas document (a booklet recording all the biennial emissions checks) corroborate the accumulation of km over the years. The car eventually ended up in a collection in Gstaad, which included all sorts of other cool cars ranging from an Audi RS2 (also built in the same factory as this car, Porsche's Rossle Bau facility where the 959 had been built) to a PTS green GT3 Touring (@thetouring on instagram). The current owner bought it from that collection and then imported it to the United States.\r\n\r\nI have been over this car closely and have been very impressed with its condition. I always check three things as soon as I am familiarizing myself with a Sacco era car with LH/HFM injection: upper wiring harness (2012 build date on this car, so it has been replaced), transmission, and whether the AC works (because the evaporator is the usual source of freon leaks and requires pulling out the dashboard to replace, which is a ~20h job). This car has cold AC and the HVAC system works as it should, and the transmission is also excellent. These transmissions generally fail in the first half of the 100s (in miles, so between 160k km and 250k km) and the most common failure mode is the seals on the various pistons that control gear selection (reverse especially) such that they select gears slowly as the transmission is on the way out. Sometimes it can take 3+ seconds to select reverse, and eventually, one day, it won't be able to develop the requisite pressure and it won't select reverse. This gearbox selects reverse extremely promptly (under 1/2 second) and shifts well in all other respects. \r\n\r\nThe remainder of the driving characteristics of the car are also excellent. The engine starts and runs as it should, the chassis and suspension are tight and solid and the car provides the magical 500E experience of indomitability on the road. The 300 pound weight reduction and shorter (2.82 vs 2.65) compared to the SL is noticeable.\r\n\r\nThe undercarriage is another highlight of this car, never restored or cleaned but excellent integrity and the engine is exceedingly clean. M119s almost always have some moisture where the heads meet the block but this one is sparkly clean and totally dry in these areas, which I have never seen in a car with this mileage. We have provided photos of both areas.\r\n\r\nThe cosmetic condition is impressive given the km; both inside and out, I would say the car reads like a 50k mile car, if I were to walk up to the car and estimate mileage without looking at the cluster. Interior notes are cracked wood on the rear center console and the original headliner is starting to droop, which is very common on non-wagon 124s. @dollardaves, interior smells like the other W124s I've driven and no evidence of burns, ash, or other damage. @klotrix the rear sunshade and sunroof both function correctly. I've not yet had a chance to check every system in the car, but every system I have used has functioned as it should. Will do a complete systems check in the coming days.\r\n\r\nAs you can see, I can go on at length about these cars and this one in particular but I'll call that good now and am happy to answer whatever other questions folks have. The next most common color was silver (DB744, 245 examples), then smoke silver (DB702, 184 examples), followed by spruce green (DB249, 64 examples), and black (DB040, 62 examples). These are the 5 most common colors of the model (accounting for 89.1% of US model production), and the 6th most common, anthracite gray (DB172) had only 19 examples imported. In all, 1354 examples were imported (88.6%) that were somewhere on the black/gray/white continuum, so a 500E in an actual color is quite rare.\r\n\r\n8 US cars were imported in this color, Bornite, of which 3 had black interiors (the others had parchment and possibly gray interiors). All US cars had full leather interior; these Karo fabric inserts were only available outside the US market. For the global market, 37 examples were made in this combination, bornite with black Karo interior. I imported a similar 92 500E in Bornite Metallic as soon as it qualified for the 25 year gray market exemption back in 2017. The only significant difference between mine and this 500E being auctioned is the interior, mine is all black leather. Originally my 500E was a Japan market car, which required me to source RHT headlights. Back in 2017 you could still get headlight components from occasional batch factory runs, but now sourcing new lenses becomes a search for NOS hiding in someones shop around the world, or perhaps from a preface wrecked 500E. It's also possible to find 500E enthusiasts who knew enough to purchase and stock spare lenses for a rainy day. I have extra lenses for both my headlights, but they will go with my Bornite 500E when I sell it someday. \r\nI would advise any 500E owner or would be new owner to join the 500Eboard.com forum. You will find the best information about these wonderful cars there. And you will find all the statistics for paint types sold worldwide there as well. The number of 8 Bornite 500E's sold in the USA mentioned in the seller last post agrees with the forums list. I've have #9 since 2017, and I guess this one is #10. The last thing I want to do with my Bornite 500E is to change the radio back to factory, in my case I believe I need to source a Becker Mexico.\r\nWhoever gets this 500E will love it, at one time I ignored all Mercedes Bornite painted cars, but since I bought mine, I'm completely sold on the color, which changes with the lighting environment, sometimes it's a medium metallic purple, sometimes it's a darker gray-purple metallic and more. A few months later I received a call and was told all of the 500Es were only going to be available in metallic colors. I kept the order in but when the 300CE cabs were unveiled I took one of those. Mid to late 1991 RBM called and said MB had decided to run 25 each of Signal Red, White and Black but it would be titled a 1992. Great car. I met this seller at the 2023 Legends and we had our Bornite 300CE Coupe Sportline celebrating Sacco's 90th birthday. We shared our passion for odd colors but we agreed Bornite is very special. At the time of bring out the color we ordered a SL and it was spectacular. Interestingly in the brochure the color was listed in the brown category. If you have never seen it you will be amazed. Sunlight does majestic things. It can be grey, brown and most excitingly a glowing purple. I know why Derek didn't offer it to me for sale, I would have bought in a second BUT this car should go for a lot more than I can pay. Seeing is believing.
