So far I have done this procedure 4 times and each time there is nearly identical scenario. The car actually uses the 3.5 603 diesel crankshaft for added durability not for more displacement.\r\n\r\nThe cars stroke is lengthened and the ECU is different. All the values in the ECU are stretched to the moon. The intakes and outtakes are different, the head is different, the exhaust is different, and quite a few other things including 4.8 ring and pinion gearing which makes accelleration excellent. Its offroad crawling ratio is thus also slower and therefore better than any other 463 petrol model.\r\n\r\nIn the comments there are errors about 1996 being without wiring harness issues, this car is within the period of the harness issues, so buyers should be ready to verify the date codes on the harnesses, or budget for re-doing them where needed. Glad to see lots of positive comments about the graphics. They are original and it is based on a famous Japanese artist from the 90s, the theme is the foam of a wave in the ocean. There is a tiny one on the spare tire cover also....which is original.\r\n\r\nThe harnesses are no longer available from Mercedes so they need to be reconstructed.\r\nIf the plugs are in good order then this is not that big of a deal, it just comes down to replacing strands of wire where insulation has broken down.\r\n\r\nThis must be done proactive though because breakdown of insulation will damage the ECU and then it would need to be rebuilt as there are no more 463 G36 ECUs available.\r\n\r\nThe G36 is a wild ride. The engine puts its power out like an old 911. What do I mean? I mean that the motor loves to rev out. It does not drive like a G500, it is much more spirited. It will not have the low end grunt of a V8 but once you get the engine over 3200 rpms and the varioram Porsche based induction system opens its gate the engine is like a race motor. From 3200 to 5200 is the play space, and its a gorgeous space.\r\n\r\nIn order to have the car drive as it should, it is legit to drive around town in \"2\" and around suburban and rural roads in \"3\" to keep engine in its powerband. Lugging around in \"4\" or Drive is not the way to drive this car. 4 is only for driving over 55 mph.\r\n\r\nOn the highway speeds, with stock tires of 31 inches, the motor revs very high. Expect to be running at 3800 rpm to go 75 mph. For some folks this can be tiring or difficult to comprehend, or produce worry on long hauls. But worry not, the engine is made to run all day long at 4000-4600 rpm.\r\n\r\nThis all makes it VERY different to drive. But if you want a G that drives like a spirited racer....this car is fucking awesome! That being said, its also an engine and tune that requires everything perfect. High test gas, all vacuum lines perfect, all sensors perfect, all injectors and plugs perfect. Without that perfection it will not run well, it will surge at idle, and sometimes not run at all. So it is a bit more high tune-maintain oriented, like any ultra high performance powertrain would be. The car, for a 1996 has an impressive data stream unlike other ECUs it gives out awesome information for tuning using the diagnostics port.\r\n\r\nI have been working on two of these over the past 2 years and also consulting on three others and have gotten to know them quite intimately.
