Thank you for looking at this auction for my (father\u2019s) \u201984 Renault R5 T2. This car was in the back of my father\u2019s brain, ever since he saw it in Black at the \u201981 Geneva Auto Show (photo provided). I remember hearing his story how what he really wanted was a Maxi and he was very close to ordering one and bringing it into the USA. Unfortunately, he was a man of many automotive distractions and thus the Maxi was not to be. This was a common occurrence for him through the years. But once all the kids were out of the house and on our way with our lives, he started hunting for the cars he wanted before we came along. This was one of the first that he hunted for and found, in part thanks to @BAT in its early days. When he received it the car received \u201cnew\u201d tires (TRX tires were rarely remanufactured in 2011 hence the 2006 date code).\r\n\r\nThe car has lived its term with my family in a climate-controlled garage. Unfortunately, driven sparingly due mainly to the aforementioned distractions. Although it was driven sparingly if it has always started and run easily. Lately the car has sat idle as my life and car needs have changed and unfortunately that means that it is time for the car to move to a new home where it will hopefully be driven and enjoyed.\r\n\r\nA note on the 1st to 2nd shift when cold. I would not describe the shift as \u201cstiff\u201d but quite the opposite: the gear box works very smoothly and easily and this is the problem. While cold the 1->2 shift is easy to go too fast for the gearbox, overwhelming the synchro. The problem can be completely avoided by taking a breath between 1st and 2nd and shifting a little slower than usual. The frequency valve, evap, lambda box and frequency valve have no effect whatsoever on the power output of the engine (though it may be better with the lambda box working). \r\n\r\nThe CA registration is of value if the rest of the parts are with the car and work properly. There should be a cat pipe, as the exhaust on the car is an OE type. Generally, a Volvo pre cat does the job. My car went 34 years with perfect emissions tests every time in CA, and over 58K kms. I ran the cat only for emissions test, but even without it, the car was quite clean with the factory 185PS kit installed. \r\n\r\nAlso, a BAR door sticker would be required as well if one is not fitted. If a door sticker is fitted, then the car can be tested at any \"test only\" or Gold Shield test station/shop. \r\n\r\nThe original EPA test paperwork is of value if you want to register in CA, as it will grant you a trip to the BAR to get the required door sticker. If you have everything installed and working, the car will EASILY pass. My guess is that the \"failed\" emissions test was because the car was tested in its current form, sans the simple emissions setup. \r\nOtherwise, this appears to be a 160 PS car (standard HP engine), in nice condition. It has had a remote oil filter installed, which makes service a lot easier. \r\nThe clutch hydraulic line appears to be a braided teflon line, replacing the original clear plastic line. \r\n\r\nThe parts situation is far better now than it was back when this car was new. Many of the trim parts are now available, courtesy of 3D printers and OE manufacturers making parts. \r\nThe nice part here is that the original spare is still with the car, as is the fill panel for the \"luggage area\" behind the engine cover. I don't really know what the problem is with the little mirror switch. I don't think that I touched mine 10 times in 34+ years of ownership. \r\n\r\nIt appears that there is no coolant in the recovery bottle under the spare. 'Should check that. \r\n\r\nI am surprised that the factory shop manual and the translation is not with this car. \r\n\r\nWhat to look for: Make sure that the fuel gauge works. Cars parked with half full or even less fuel tanks will get lots of condensation in the tanks, which will rot out the lower fuel sender (there are two; upper and lower) and render the fuel gauge inop. The current fix is a new upper unit that is a float less type, very long to reach down to the bottom of the fuel tank. 'Comes with a wiring harness to integrate the fuel signal and give an accurate fuel reading. The thing holds 23 gallons... Figure on $100 fill ups, or more. \r\n\r\nNote: 99% of problems with \"poor running\" is usually due to water in the fuel. Keeping the tanks full will take care of this problem. I never had a problem in 34 years with mine. Another area that might cause a problem is the warm up regulator which is often replaced with the wrong unit or modified. 'Never had a problem with mine, but one of the cars that I prepped had the wrong unit, which I replaced with the proper one. \r\n\r\nThe upholstery is in nice shape, and can be pulled tight with new rubber bands underneath. \r\nCheck the headliner for sagging (especially in the rear by the hatch), as the foam usually gives up after about 15 or so years, and this car is considerably older. The fix is not too difficult, as the original material can be scraped and re glued to new foam backing. Not a big deal, considering that the value of this car is probably around $160,000. Give or take... \r\n\r\nCracking between the rear fenders and the unit body are standard for R5 turbos that don't have a full roll cage. \r\n\r\nThe front, rear and rocker covers are the proper color. \r\n\r\nThe surface rust on the suspension parts is normal, and most of the cars came with that feature as standard. They didn't use much paint on the suspension arms. \r\n\r\nSo, here is a very nice R5 Turbo, with what might be a beneficial CA history if the emissions equipment is fitted for bi yearly testing (you can take off the cat in and replace the stock muffler in about 15 minutes), which gives this car maybe a little more value if the parts are there. \r\n\r\nI would be surprised if this one doesn't make 6 figures. It really depends on your cat pipe, and where the cat was mounted in the first place. Many of the cats were welded into the exhaust in situ, and the exhaust has to be cut to remove it. \r\n\r\nHow many miles do you have? Cats will last 100,000 miles... If you are having problems with passing emissions in CA, you might have another problem. Adjusting the valves can help, along with a set of fresh spark plugs. \r\n\r\nMy last replacement cat pipe was a \"Devil\" type stainless exhaust from 3S Development, with a high flow spun case (MagnaFlow) cat welded in place of the resonator. Fit was perfect, and the pipe just slides into place from top or bottom, and uses stock mountings, as well as the all important springs and studs at the turbo. The O2 sensor was installed in the pipe as well, just aft of the mounting flange with a spade connector to complete the installation. No rattles, no difficulties in removal or replacement (less than 20 minutes, including jacking up the car (not really necessary) and removal of the engine/transmission compartment floor. \r\n\r\nIf you have a Volvo pre cat (1980s part), it is mounted at the end of your exhaust pipe, and you don't have a muffler on your car, with a pea shooter exhaust pipe. Again NO STOCK MUFFLER, just a bullet shaped cat with no heat shield. If you have a muffler, you have a cat up under your transmission floor, so match that up. However, you will have to cut up your exhaust to fit another one. Be careful, as you will burn the left rear lower arm bushing when doing the installation. That means a suspension rebuild... Consider cutting the exhaust aft of the cat and welding in a flange so that you can remove the entire system. \r\n\r\nIf you have a Volvo cat, you can cut the exhaust where it turns straight down and flange it there. \r\n\r\nSun did my DOT paperwork as well. The problem at the time was not that the work \"failed\", but that the papers were not properly filed by companies such as Bob's Automotive, which waited months before finally submitting the paperwork, during which time Renault sent the DOT their paperwork saying that the cars could never pass DOT regulations. \r\nThen, it took another year and a half to get the final approval of the compliance. I called the NTSB DOT guy every day... He finally got tired of me and sent me my paperwork so I could get my plates. The DOT guy? Merrit, of Fitzgerald and Merrit, the Ferrari book guys. \r\n\r\nHard shifting between 1st and 2nd can be traced to the little plastic cups in the rod ends of the shifter at the transmission. These can be easily replaced with 8X1.5mm rod ends and a LH and RH threaded link. Shifting will be quite excellent. You can build this linkage for a fraction of what 3S charges, or you can just order it and do the installation yourself. You will have to remove the shift rod (mark it so you get it back in the same place, avoiding having to find the right position again), cut off the end of the rod just forward of the old cup rod end, drill it and tap it 8X1.5 and screw in the new rod end, with a pair of high angulation conical washer/spacers. \r\n\r\nOn some of the R5Turbos, the evap canister is forward the right shock tower, on others, it is a Mercedes can from an old SL, in the aft of the right side rear fender, or forward of the oil cooler on the right side. \r\nMy car had the lambda box in the rocker next to the driver's seat another car had it in the left rear fender, under the ignition module, behind the trim panel. \r\nThe frequency valve was installed down at the fuel distributor, but Sun often installed the valve next to the warm up/pressure regulator. Connection was to the same fuel pressure/fuel return lines. O2 sensors could be in the exhaust manifold collector or at the exhaust pipe, just downstream of the turbo (my preference). \r\n\r\nThe installation of the frequency valve or Lambda box doesn't have any effect on the performance. Engine settings, including CO are the standard factory settings. If you get one, remember to dig out the rubber washer and fit a full 11' long -4 braided teflon clutch line with the appropriate adapters (straight at the slave cylinder, banjo for the clutch master cylinder. \r\n\r\nEuropean suppliers offer the door button trim in black for a few bucks each. I usually have a couple of new ones around. They just snap on easy if you use a little silicone grease. Lots of parts are available in Europe now. Far more than what was available when the cars were new.\r\nIf you can afford one of these cars, the availability is much more important than the price. \r\n\r\nThe car probably didn't pass emissions because the cat was missing. It was likely that the O2 sensor was installed in the cat pipe, not in the intake. This was a lot easier to do than removing the intake to install the O2 bung. Having all the parts would certainly raise the value of the car. \r\n\r\nNow, about the car not being wild enough for a 15 year old kid... Note that the R5 Turbo was actually quicker than those Ferrari 308s and Corvettes back then, which I would guess were \"wilder\" looking. And. nothing looked like an R5 Turbo in the early 80s. Certainly nothing really out handled it. You will need to find the fuse for it and see if it is working. The frequency valve will buzz if it is working. \r\n\r\nA cat pipe should be made up. I use the stainless exhaust from 3S Development with a spun case cat replacing the resonator/muffler. Sounds just fine when finished, and it should pass emissions if everything is working. \r\n\r\nYou don't need to know anything about CA emissions, but if a buyer in CA buys it and wants to register it here, they should know that they have all the right parts, and that the car COULD be legal with a trip to the BAR for the door sticker (so that any shop can emissions test it every couple of years). \r\n\r\nDoor button trim is available, and not at all expensive. Again, 3S development or GBS Alpine has them for a couple of bucks each. They press on (\"snap\") with a little silicone grease. I was visiting some good friends at their Foreign Motors shop one day when a customer of theirs stopped in to check on one of us cars they were working on for his. He had dozens of collectible automobiles of all types, very wealthy guy but came out of our old neighborhood just like all of us and very down to earth. I also had known him for years so when he pulled up in his R5 I had to get a better look. He noticed me checking everything about it and said the magic words \u201cwant to drive it\u201d?
