Back in the 50's Studebaker were awarded with the Mercedes dealership rights. The brass were so enamoured with Mercedes they tried to use the trident on the hoods of the 53 model. They were sued and instead resorted to using the Mercedes grill design in 56 and I think ruined the look of the sleek cars they produced. It took many years to shake that grill but too late for Studebaker. \nStudebaker were gambling on high octane fuel after the war so they designed a small displacement motor with high compression. They lost the bet when low octane fuel was decided on and they redesigned the heads and moved on. The bottom end on these motors were incredibly strong. They are built very similar to the Cadillac 331. In fact with a little machining the intakes can be interchanged. Much speculation from both camps as to who influenced who but perhaps we'll never know that story. If someone were to take the time and money to design a proper flowing head these motors would be powerful little monsters.\nI'll be watching this one. To answer a few of the questions we have seen: \n-The A/C compressor has no belt on it because we have chosen to sell the car as is. We are not sure why a belt was never put back on before we acquired the car, the compressor pulley turns freely and the clutch seems to be fine. We are sure that bidders will take that into consideration. Keep in mind BaT writes the descriptions for all the vehicles. We certainly don't want people to think we are hiding anything, we simply chose not to diagnose the A/C system. \n-The \"aire\" roof not being present on this wagon could be a plus. We've heard that they were leaky, but you still have the same shape and look of a wagon that had the sliding roof.\n-As far as rust is concerned, BaT mentions no \"rust through\" - there are a few spots of rust bubbles or peeling paint which we were sure to show in pictures, but there is no rust through or holes from rust. The rest of the car looks to be solid. Stevens also designed the Jeep Wagoneer. The back section of the roof on the Studebaker would slide open... the guy was a brilliant designer. The Jeep Wagoneer was created to be pretty much timeless with his \"Panascopic Vision\", the incredible sweep of visibility. These cars share that great visibility. First car accident I was in was in a Studebaker Lark... my grandfather saw the drunk coming and pulled off the road, onto the shoulder and stopped... and the guy still found us and caved in the left front fender. Guess that would have been a 59 or 60 Lark in about 1962? \r\n\r\nThis is a very nice copy... I'm glad it's that far back east because there's no room in the driveway... If you're ever in Reno, check out their collection, there's more than one Studebaker in there. Well, there was... they sold the last Wagoneer... :( one of 4 1992 models. Hunter Green. I think it is fair to say once rust begins \"under\" this crimp it is basically impossible to access without removing the door skin (at least in that zone). The crimp zone can be sealed from getting further moisture in, but once contaminated, there is no guarantee it won't resurface (so to speak).\n\nFourth, of course if the door skin had previous \"surface\" rust prior to repaint, and it was not properly treated then sure it will return.\n\nFinally, I never have understood how a vehicle can be described by a seller as \"rust free\" when mysterious bubbles clearly exist along zones known to rust easily. That and the fact \nwhen rust \"appearing\" bubbles are evident, to suggest there is no rust \"through\" is a stretch.
