Look how the tach goes backward so you can read it at 5000 rpm plus, where it matters. There isn't a bad angle on the body. Over 6 feet, you might want to think about something bigger, but the interior doesn't feel cramped. The spare tire and fuel tank are both within The wheelbase, avoiding balance change due to fuel load. \n\nOurs was a very late Bertone built example, and it was TROUBLE FREE from new through six years of daily driving. Bought the car from a local charity for $200 running but in need of clutch hydraulics. Replaced the master and slave cylidners on the street outside my apartment and I was in business. That car was a blast to drive in stock configuration and when I added 4-spoke Campys with 185/13 Yokohama AVSi tires, I basically never needed to use the brakes again -- it would handle any corner at seemingly any speed. Broke down once on me when an old coolant hose burst -- was back on the road later that afternoon. The car was ratty, but it served me well. The first-gen MR2 that replaced it was a far better car in nearly every way, but it wasn't nearly as involving to drive. (no faults, you pass) non modern cars, like this, need a dyno tailpipe smog. problem 1. problem 2, is no mater, all cars require a visual inspection, and the all the cars original smog equipment needs to be in place and plumbed correctly. 3rd is you can't replace any emissions related device (such as the airbox, exhaust, intake, etc. etc.) unless its a BAR certified device.. so, you have to have the factory parts, plumbed correctly, and meet the tailpipe #'s. not impossible, but super suxs. until that changes, just about everyone in cali is buying 75 and older exempt cars. oh, and I'm pretty sure DMV requires the seller to smog and pass in order to transfer it in ca, if this is registered in ca now, I'm not sure if it can be sold in ca? It says 49 state legal (it was not originally sold in CA, I think that means.) It does not say, but I'm pretty sure it was originally carburetted, not fuel injection. It clearly won't pass even the visual inspection without the cat, and, as others have pointed out, all of the original intake and exhaust and other emissions control stuff must be present and unmodified. Originally I was going to swap in an Integra type R powertrain - I have the engine - and go through the BAR process. Others have done this, and there are kits available (at least for the K series Honda, but I think also the B series.) There's even youtube of someone driving one on the PCH\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-_dVRFk31k\nBut I don't have time. And I'm not likely to have time for quite a while.\n\nOn the undercoat: having owned a few of these, I can say that the black underneath looks like the factory undercoat to me. I'm happy to take closer pics or even scrape some off if anyone wants to see.\nOn the hangar: it's my business (we make electric powertrains for trucks and buses) but we have spare space, so I have some of my things here, including a Rolls Royce Meteor engine and a Guiberson radial diesel that you can see in some shots.\nOn the handling: it is hard to describe why it is so good, but at least a part of it is the feedback you get through the unboosted steering. It's better in that respect than anything else I've ever driven. Even driving straight you get some feel, and if that goes away, you know it's aquaplaning...\nOn the 400 miles: I'm running a startup company, working 80 hours a week, 7 days. Sometimes I take the Caterham up to Starbucks, but that's about all I have time for. I was actually surprised it was as much as 400 miles. After purchasing, drove it to a friends house in York, PA following @Blythbros in his 84 GTI, where in the water-pump belt broke once in York a few miles from his home in the massive storm we were fighting the whole way there. I spent two days to find out my \" '79\" had a 1300 engine, and fitting the right belt. After finally fixing it, I left at 5 PM from York all the way home to southern Indiana. What a fun and nerve-wracking 11 hour trip driving alone in an X halfway across the country. I will admit I did baby it, but definitely enjoyed the top down experience and the ease of installing the Targa roadside in OH when a sudden downpour hit. Just north of Cincinnati, I had to pull over and take a short pisolino at a rest stop when I realized I couldn't go for another 3 hours to home. You just sit in the drivers seat, hike your legs over to the passenger side, lean against that Italian faux leather buckets,c over yourself with a jacket and off to sleep.
