These cars have so many unique upscale features and they are much better engineered than their S-class competitor of the day. The road noise isolation is world class and the hvac design and controls are sublime! The heated, cooled and massaging seats are awesome as well. The major downside to these cars is finding someone to work on them if anything goes wrong but thankfully they are pretty reliable. The only major problem that I had over 20k miles was a fuel pump failure but they have 2 and pulling a fuse for the bad one allowed me to get it to a shop capable of doing the replacement after the small-town shop we limped to refused to touch it!! I've owned a '04 W12 for the past couple of years. It has 175K on the clock and still feels like a new car. I've had it in for unscheduled maintenance twice in that time. However I can say that the previous owner, who drove and pampered the car for 8 years and about 90K miles, averaged about every 4 months for mx. Now not all of it was serious. He'd bring it in if there was a squeak in the upholstery for example. Frequency of maintenance on these cars has a lot to do with owners loving them so much and wanting all the features to work perfectly all the time. The stuff that most of us would let be on our DD Hondas are things the average Phaeton owners get fixed not because they necessarily need to be done, but a lot of times because we feel the car just deserves it.\n\nNow having said that, it is true that maintenance on Phaetons does not depreciate like the acquisition cost has. If anything they are more expensive to maintain since there are less shops that know how to. And shop rates and part prices have inflated over the past 15 years. Finding a \"factory trained\" Phaeton mechanic is not near as important as finding a mechanic who currently and constantly has been maintaining a Phaeton. Keep in mind that no Phaeton certified mechanic has gone to a Phaeton class in over a decade. And the Phaeton techs that I have spoken to say that when the cars were being sold, almost none of them did actual repairs on them. Essentially they performed diagnostics and if something wasn't right parts were just replaced, i.e. nothing was actually fixed. Often they inform you to do simple things like thermostat or water pump when they are accessible during other repairs. Two trips to the non-dealer mechanic and about 9k later it's like new again. I now have 94k on the odometer and plan on driving it for another 94k. Fabulous car that has never stranded me in all these years. Definitely a weak point on the Phaeton. Put 295k mikes on it and would have kept it for years if not for a coolant leak from the oil cooler assembly that required dropping the engine to fix. Just change the oil regularly and service the transmission every 50k miles. Learned the transmission lesson the hard way at 100k miles but no issue after that. Oddly enough the biggest reliability issue I had was with window regulators...I think I replaced 5-6 over the life of the car. CD based gps system died too but was no great loss. Engine was bullet proof and gave me no issues until the leak at 295k miles. \r\n\r\nWould highly recommend to anyone who\u2019s interested. They\u2019re great cars, very understated, and exceedingly rare.
