And I believe that Mokes handle even better than a regular Minis because of the lower center of gravity. \n\nI'm not a fan of the wrong speedometer being fitted. In Mini circles back in the 1980s (likely earlier too) tales of the Catalina Mokes were traded back and forth like a sighting of the Holy Grail. However, when I visited the island around 1989 all of the Mokes still remaining were pretty beat up and literally falling apart -- after all they were just rental vehicles to visitors. Look at the pictures of this one before was restored and you get an idea of the hard life they lived. Even at that time they were being replaced by golf carts.\n\n\nMokes also enjoyed tremendous popularity on the island of Barbados. I was his co-pilot in the large Chevy station wagon, fitted with a strident and very bright red plastic triple trumpet air horn with associated compressor and plastic hoses. It was Italian, and played three extremely high notes which precisely clashed and got your attention. Hurt a bit, too. He had wired the compressor in place of the Chevy's horn but it drew too much current as evidenced by the headlights dimming when he blasted those trumpets. Perhaps a larger capacity relay would have helped? And isn't that \"dimming the lights when you blow the horn trick\" stereotype typically hung around the neck of small british cars (insert Lucas joke here if you must.) But in this case the Chevrolet was forgiven, because though the lights dimmed when he unleashed that insanely loud and piercing horn, the safety deficit was somewhat offset by the populous being aware of our location because the horn threatened to puncture eardrums from a good, safe distance.\nOne of the events was a two-person per car slalom around the cones. The driver is blindfolded and the navigator instructs and provides feedback. Kind of like rallying, but at 10 mph. And the driver is blindfolded. \nIt began with a modified Le Mans start. Only one car on track at a time (blindfolded drivers, duh) but each team had to run to the car at the sound of a whistle, driver puts on the blindfold, and the shouting begins. Hrach was the driver, I was the cone location shouter. We went into a full runners crouch before the judge's table, but facing in the wrong direction, just to even up the odds. We had a secret weapon hidden in plain sight: The Mini Moke itself. The scorchingly fast Mini Coopers were much deadlier weapons at a regular autocross at which they would eat the Moke's lunch and leave it crying. But it is the single best damn car in the world for low speed blindfold-driving cone slalom time contests. At 10 mph the super duper Cooper has no advantage. And the Moke gives you unlimited 360 degree outward visibility. All cones are visible to the shouter at all times. Yes, you look like a living Playskool figure towering out of your car. Which gives you an unobstructed view at all times. That's huge in this event. Mark Donahue wrote about having an \"Unfair Advantage.\" This was the Moke's Mark Donahue moment. An unusual test, yes, but fair to all entrants. Who says Nurburgring lap time is the only measure of greatness? \nNow, had there been two Mini Mokes, who knows? But on that day, blindfolded Hrach Checkijian of Watertown, Massachusetts and yours truly won Best Time Of The Day and another anodized Mini-Meet award badge was expoxied to his Moke. \nAs for this one on offer: Shiny paint, wow. It went through snow and on the beach. Among other things it had an 8-port head, super wide slicks and, reportedly, power steering. Pinto based steering as I recall, it was needed due to the slicks and not because of the power plant. That may be the hot rod Moke you\u2019re thinking of but there were probably others. In the 90s Bob Tarzwell raced the Moke From Hell, a definite hot rod, but that was pretty straightforward in the steering department.\n\nVirginia in 1983 sounds about right, but spending a weekend replacing a burnt valve won\u2019t beat the shop rate! For whatever reason my 997 went through a phase of burning exhaust valves and I can still do that replacement in two hours. Unfortunately I still get to practice it replacing bent valves or blown head gaskets (slightly less time for the latter) on the race car. My daughter and I picked it from Larry H in NJ in 2000 and we did a complete restoration. Larry H( not to be confused with LarryH BaT poster) rescued about 50 British Mokes from Catalina Island in the early 1990s. Those rental Mokes were on Catalina from about 1967 through 1990. Larry H shipped them back to the mainland then divided the collection with Tom S from Minnesota. There was no special livery, but some had \"Catalina Rental\" or some such on the bonnet. I have our original bonnet in the garage attic, but I'm too lazy to check the wording. It appears the Mokes were painted every few years in bright colors (pink, red, yellow, light blue, etc..), but the paint jobs weren't the best.\n\nOne of Hrach's stunt was to dead lift the rear end of the Moke using the rear bumper. Hrach passed away about 6 years ago.
