For the rear I designed in a mud guard behind the license plate that protects the rear of the engine and intake. It's not installed on most of the photos and is a bit hard to see by design. \r\n\r\nNo front fender but I did leave all the attachment points for one on the fork tubes. My son is 5\u201811\u201d with a much longer inseam and he rides it comfortably too. \r\n\r\nOn this build I took into consideration the comfort and position of the rider. I have experience in triathlon cycling which requires the rider to be aerodynamic, comfortable and open around the lungs to generate max power. As the rider pivots forward at the hips for aero, he must also pivot the feet back to keep the relative angle of the torso to thighs open. If not then you lean over and compress your lungs. \r\n\r\nThe rider of the bicycle is the engine, so this is not as important on a motorcycle, but can still apply. When we fit clip-ons on a caf\u00e9 racer, we must also move the pegs back for proper comport and fitment. I used Cognito Moto\u2019s rear set mounts as they have the best location for the CB550. Some people put the pegs on the passenger peg mounts, but this is just a cheap and sub-standard approach as the pegs will be too high and too far back. \r\n\r\nTo further allow adjustability for different sized riders, I used Tommaselli 3-way clip-ons. These have an additional degree of freedom so that the angle of the bars to horizontal can change. The latter was the last gasp of the 450 DOHC twin with torsion bar valve springs. Although a technical tour-de-force, the twin was quite vibration laden but its main drawback was that the beautiful architecture of the cylinder head made the engine too tall to fit into an appropriate frame. If mounted high enough to give decent lean clearance, the frame would be too high to step over comfortably. If mounted low enough for rider comfort for those under NBA height, the cases would drag. Honda compromised and put it into bikes that would neither corner well nor be comfortable for average sized riders.\n\nThe final insult was that the darn things were so well built that they'd never wear out...condemning those who bought one to suffer a long time.\n\nBy some engineering magic, Bob Hansen actually made a somewhat competitive road racer out of one...earning him Jimi's \"Sow's Ear\" award for that year. \n\nOne of the bike rags posted the following quiz question:\n\nWhen Honda updated the 450, they made it...\n\n 1. I was traveling at low enough speed that I didn't think I would catch any spray off the tires. I crossed a small stream of what can only described as garbage juice, the whitish-gray fluid that seeps from a restaurant dumpster in the peak of summer. Low speed was not enough to save me as the mystery goop was flung from the tires in all directions. A bit pricey but allows for signals with a clean look. \n\nI have to admit I'm a sucker for velocity stacks. When I see a set of down drafts with stacks under the hoodie a car, I'm in love! My last bike had velocity stacks and my next will too. These are from Steel Dragon. Top quality and they have brass screens inside. It's also hard to see but there is a small rear fender that extends below the license plate. It's only in the photos of the bike on the rolling work stand.
