Since it was painted in the 2000's, likely 504/C in Glasurit urethane-type (I think 106-A-18 code was for1979 and earlier using Glidden Salchi lacquer) I recently repainted my red 308 to 504/C Blue Sera urethane, no regrets, gorgeous color which changes with ambient lighting.\n\nThis Boxer looks to have had a concourse-level color change, the quality of work would concern me zero, especially to such a desirable color. Great detailing and presentation by @1600veloce\n\nI owned an Injected Boxer for 25 years and it was a wild ride... so a Carb'd Boxer (with a full Ansa Sport exhaust!) would be a increased blast. They collect exhaust samples into bags and measure byproduct by weight. It would be more straightforward than most people realize for a 1979 vehicle, especially since there is at least one that has been done, in the same year no less (precedent). \r\n\r\nIt's the cost that tweaks people out (really because it's high as compared to values for common and ordinary imports), but for this 512bb being as stunning and valuable as it is, the cost is easily worth it. As long as the engine is tight, there shouldn't be too much to clean up the tailpipe. We're not talking about a 1955 Chevy or something like that.\r\n\r\nWhat readings were you seeing at the tailpipe? Do you know what would be realistic cut-points for 1979 for an engine of that size? Second, they\u2019re difficult to service and expensive to service. Moreover, the number of mechanics in California who are qualified to work on a carbureted Ferrari is dropping like a lead balloon. Some parts are absolutely unavailable, like gears, and must be manufactured from scratch when they break. The cost of difficult maintenance which costs \u201cextra\u201d is a consideration of ownership in purchase price. (that\u2019s why 1980s rolls Royces are cheap; or Tom Hanks in the money pit) I find it entertaining for so many people to comment about the California emissions process, speculating about what may be /could be done for a few or several thousand dollars. There is a reason there are so few boxers in California with California plates. It\u2019s next to or actually impossible. 20 years ago everyone registered cars in Oregon and the California highway patrol ruined that. The Montana LLC house of cards is slowly eroding in California, so that is not much of an option for long-term ownership. And that leaves one, he/ she who wants to follow the law, with a predicament \u2013 can you actually legally register a carbureted boxer in California , and the answer is pretty much no unless it has previously been registered here before. There are questions of how and when, and then there are questions of \u201cif\u201d. And unless a car was previously registered in the state, it would be highly cost inefficient or impossible to register a boxer in the state. One could buy a Daytona or a Dino and have less headache. And surely, if you have $300,000, you have 500,000. \r\n\r\nEarlier somebody commented about how \u201ccheap \u201cthese cars are. CO2 (%) is not tested but the measurement is provided and useful to look at.\r\n\r\nFor a retrofit, the vehicle undergoes lab testing under more thorough conditions and emissions is collected (GPM). I believe they use the IM240 route and I'm sure various other conditions. Once retrofitted, then the vehicle would be tested biannually as described above.\r\n\r\nNo statute for air pumps but air pumps and cats were the best-option technology at the time. Cats and air pumps can clean up 50% - over 90% of exhaust emissions depending on the vehicle, year, etc. For 1979, the emissions cut-points are so loose that a 2022 Toyota could pass them without a catalytic converter.\r\n\r\nLooking at the 1979 test cut-off standards (it's public info for anyone to lookup) for cars like a Jaguar V12, Maserati quattroporte and Ferrari 308 for example, they are very generous. An air pump and two-way cat cat would be very effective. NOx was much easier to pass in 1979.\r\n\r\nI think a 1979 Ferrari with a carb is either the same or less challenging to meet emissions standard than a 512BBi. The 512BBi may be fuel injected but standards got significantly more strict by then, so a higher bar to pass. Pick your poison I suppose. \r\n\r\nBut neither is impossible and I don't think there is a advantage/significant price discount to retrofit a BBi vs a BB, if any. Like other euro Ferraris of the era, K-Jetronic is used on the BBi but without an O2 sensor (no exhaust feedback). US K-Jetronic uses an 02 sensor and a frequency valve to modulate the A/F ratio which is needed for a three-way cat to function correctly. This is why many gray-market cars in the 1980's had a \"black-box\" connected to an O2 sensor. Also, testing for NOx became very tough during this period, hence lower compression and retarded ignition timing cars for the US market. \r\n\r\nLike anything else, it pays to shop around but there also is value to a contractor that has extensive experience in the field along with specific specific experience to that application, whether it's a car, house or anything else.\r\n\r\nReally, the only difficult part of the process is not California but vehicle owners. It's basically: select retrofit company, drop off car, pay costs/fees and collect car in 8 - 12 weeks. Doesn't seem that complicated to me. The frustration I think is vehicle owner's want to do the work themselves or take short-cuts in the process. But the actual process itself is well-defined and not complicated or insurmountable at all for most applications. Zombie myths out there that even after all these years still can't be killed. Also, people think that their car will get carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey and power would be cut in half or something like that. If there is a loss in power, it would be relatively minimal.\r\n\r\nAs far as the cost...well....it's relative. That $50,000 surf shack from the 1960's is now worth $1.5 million, so if Californians are going to complain about a $47k retrofit, then they should also complain about being much too wealthy. A lot of wealth was made living in California, so giving $47k back to for a retrofit is not a terrible tradeoff to drive a BB legally on the streets. I know it's nice to have lived the days of American Graffiti with 10 cent hamburgers and 25 cent gas but that's not 2022. \r\n\r\nThe other rub here for Californians (and other states) is state sales tax, which is roughly 7.5% - 9.5% based on location. Combined with a retofit and costs really start to add up. Another reason why a Montana LLC has been so appealing to Californians and others (no sales tax on vehicles registered in Montana) but again, the government and CHP is very aware of this ruse and it is considered tax evasion. \r\n\r\nI live in a state where there is no emissions testing and no sales tax for collectible vehicles. Also no annual registration renewal. But that $50k home from decades ago is probably only worth $500k. The statue was intended to give protections to a buyer for those situations. If a seller explicitly conveys to a buyer that the vehicle cannot pass smog and must be registered non-op/sold non-op, then a buyer has no recourse for claiming inability to obtain smog....and the vehicle cannot be registered for road use by the buyer without a smog cert. But the new buyer can still get a title for ownership purposes. \r\n\r\nRegistered vs. non-op: aside from not driving the vehicle on public roads, it is about obtaining a non-op registration, no vehicle insurance and no smog plus reduced renewal fees. \r\n\r\nNo need for lawyers and CARB, etc. since an individual cannot get a certificate of compliance for a grey-market vehicle anyway without using an approved modifier. Over 25 years old, it is not legal in CA. If it had a CARB sticker I would include the photos. But as a dealer I would not be able to confirm it could pass either way. This testing is usually done by the manufacturer of the part. It may be possible to have this incorporated into the compliance process as listed above. There is no comparison, truly. As Ferrari/McLaren designer Frank Stephensen explains, this was a \"new breed\" of Ferrari....from front engine GTs (touring machines) to exotic mid-engine 12 Supercars. This was Ferraris first production Supercar. And with the addition of modern tires, the Boxer is an amazing drive. Much more playful than a 512M and of course far more sporting than the GT cars. It's like trying to compare a 575 to an Enzo, a GT car to mid-engined supercar. The Boxer has that mid-engine V12 supercar feel when you drive it. Also, you can never really appreciate a Boxer in photos the way you can in the flesh. For example, the way the rear fender curvaceous flows out from the bodywork, its truly sensual artwork that can only be truly appreciated in the flesh. Exterior dimensions are nearly the same, at least when comparing say a 1984 Boxer to a 1984 308. Road & Track shows the length of 172.4, width of 67.7 and height of 44.1 with a 92.1\" wheelbase for the 308. The Boxer is 72 wide, 44.0 tall, 173.2 length with a 98.4\" wheelbase. So realistically, size wise other than the Boxer being four inches wider, the two cars are more or less the same length. BTW, for reference, the \"small\" V8 Ferrari of today is 6\" wider and 8\" longer than the Boxer and much longer 104.3 inch wheelbase. The Boxer by today's standards is small. The Boxer is narrower than the current 911 and nearly half a foot shorter as well. The short wheelbase of the 308 will make the car feel more nimble whereas the longer wheelbase of the Boxer will make the car more stable at higher speeds.
