The newer multi shift level trans. are good for all purposes, that's why you see so many automatics in special builds now days. The real start seemed to be the GM 700R-4 & 200R-4, & progressing from that into 6-8 shift automatics. Seen a lot of 5-6 speed manuals from the aftermarket & recycled O.E. With the build quality of newer special vehicles, its not uncommon to see road trips now days, so with highway speeds at 75mph, it's nice to have a low RPM final gear, plus with the newer trans., you can run shorter gears for local driving, but still have that tall gear low RPM. I remember how those hydramatic performed, pretty durable, but like pulling taffy.
