The S6 Plus started in 1995 when Audi changed the larger C4 body to the A6 and wanted the performance version to match the nomenclature. These are its friends that it has been hanging with. @bobhailend is exactly right. It is the same platform (Audi C4) that the 1995 S6 was built on. That platform started in 1992 and for sedans ended in 1997 and 1998 for Avants but the S-cars in the US on the platform ended in 1995.
