He bought a business in 1979 and this was the first \"company truck\" as it came with the business. The rot was heavy, as the business used caustic chemicals so leaks/spills took a heavy toll on the body.\r\n\r\nMy dad always dreamed of having a boat, though he never bought one other than a Hobie Cat sail boat. It had to be a knock off brand but it fit in the back of the GMC pretty good. He could load it, unload it himself but the drag through the sand was no fun (today they have sand tire dollies that work great). One day coming back from the beach, the shocks were getting tired (as was the whole truck) and one bounce too many sent the Hobie Cat onto the roadway. So stop and reload it in a busy 6 lane road. Don't remember too many sailing stories but I sure remember that roadway incident! The boat spent years tilted on its side on the side of our house. I'd bet he didn't use that thing a dozen times. The GMC was a daily driver until 1983ish, the rot had taken over, doors were sagging, tailgate was a DO NOT OPEN situation since the hinges were gone. I think the final death blow was the tranny lost reverse. Dad didn't care, he would just park it where ever he didn't need reverse. The model run based on the intermediate platform from \u201878-88 was down sized and equally underpowered at the very least and possibly more so with smog choking six & eight cylinder engine choices. Everyone builds a 350 up when restoring one because they sucked so bad at power. This is a rare truck now due to its GMC brand, options and restored condition maintaining its full originality. I will not be surprised if this truck does not meet its reserve here. Far too many enthusiasts pass on the Malaise era vehicles and dismiss them based on the horsepower numbers, yet critically over look the the classic styling and effort it took of the designers from that period to meet the crushing governmental regulations on safety to bring vehicles to market that appealed to the masses. Were it not for the 1973-1988 Malaise era, the automotive landscape would have never evolved into what it is today with fuel economy & injection and safety regulations. Manufacturers had to evolve.\nThis GMC is stunning in its condition as most rotted away and never taken care of. Cost-cutting in very obvious places (like the molded interior plastics), and a general attitude of \"we're GM...we know you're going to buy our cars no matter how shoddily we build them.\"\r\n\r\nMy grandparents had a '75 Chevy Malibu up until about 1983, and I remember even as a kid I could tell it was a poorly-built car. Mercedes-Benz of the era were famous for the doors that evoked the sound and security of a bank vault door (the famous comparison). When you slammed a door on Granny and Grandpa's Malibu, it was more like slamming a door of an old refrigerator with too many half-empty condiment bottles in the door shelves. \r\n\r\nThe '78 General Motors intermediates certainly weren't perfect, but they were a breath of fresh air compared to the bloated models they replaced. A much better effort at making all the interior plastics match, and a higher level of build quality. My first everything was in one of these I bought my jr yr in high school 1976 it was a 1974 SS 454 but the fuel crunch was on and the 454 only made like 240 hp ..I still own it and started a resto in 1992 and was almost complete in 94 I had found all NOS bed trim and had taken it to the chrome shop to polish my dad had a stroke so i took care of him the next 10 yrs with the polished trim in the bed .. after dad passed i started putting back together to find the chrome shop warped all the molding to the point it cant be used with that said its still covered in my shop and no trim.. It appears that there may be some bed trim here if so i would be interested in it if the seller or new owner wants to part with it or maybe someone here knows a source of bed moulding. Someone nick-named the 1970 a police pursuit El Camino because the way it looked. Dark gray, shaved chrome, rally wheels, poverty hubcaps, etc. \r\nSecond was a 1987 Choo Choo Custom, I sold my new truck when I found it.\r\nI significantly upgraded mechanical components for performance over the years of driving and we went all over the country. They both drove really good and were useful for us, but a tractor trailer turned over the 1987 before I retired.\r\nI drive my classics most of the time. Newer things here rarely get used but sometimes my wife insists on using a newer car. Bummer. I've never met a car I didn't like and had a variety. \r\nThe El Camino type stood out; comfortable, reliable, all types of use for us local as well as distance. Uniquely the 1987 faded gray, stance, and rumbling exhaust got a lot of thumbs up. Twice I received compliments when police officers pulled me over but I didn't get a ticket. I had to explain the details of the vehicle to them.
