II Mini. Yeah, I can see the photo of the TUV compliance plate (if that's the right term) clearly saying Mk. II, but it is wrong. Assuming that plate is original to this car, (and I have no reason at all to think otherwise), then it must be some German-market specific reason the plate says that - I'm guessing BMC/British Leyland/Austin Rover decided not to deal with the German bureaucracy to update it over the years and they just left it that way when they introduced the Mk. III and later Minis to the German market. As a point of fact, the details on this car (e.g. internally hinged doors, single bolt for each front subframe tower) clearly indicate it's a true Mk. IV Mini in the rest of the (non-German market) world. \n\nThis looks to be a nicely built Mini with the 1275 engine upgrade and with Cooper S disc brakes too (something the last several Minis auctioned here on BaT did not feature). It's great to see a Mini offered in this less-common color combination. Looks sharp. It is a nice option to have but down here you can live without a/c or heat for that matter in any car, i am sure it would be near impossible to live without heat up in your neck of the woods for the Winter ;). It\u2019s actually a quite refreshing change from some previous auctions even if the lower BMW factor (bitching, moaning and whining) reduces the number of comments. I trust that the winning bidder takes this Mini home and uses it, not abuses it but actually uses it for more than C&C. And let\u2019s not get totally distracted by the Australian S that just went up on BaT and lose sight of this Mini. There are now have two very nice Minis on auction that are in different sectors of the market, so watch them both. Better yet, bid on them both! For this one, lose the hula girl and add a battery hold-down and it\u2019s good to go. The former is a personal preference and the latter doesn\u2019t matter much as the cables will keep the battery from traveling too far. It must mean something when that\u2019s about all I can come up with. It\u2019s an overall nice specification that should be a fun driver in-town and on the highway.\n\nPrevious commenters have provided worthwhile information on the Mk. II nomenclature as well as the ins and outs of the German market Minis. One question for those obviously more knowledgeable than me is, just out of interest, what would the original front brakes have been on this? And I\u2019ll throw in an observation that there\u2019s a mechanical fuel pump on the engine as well as an electric pump maybe peeking out of the rear subframe rail. Are there two pumps on the car or am I seeing something else in the back? I used that combo on an Audi 100 because the mechanical pump vapor locked so easily once we were blessed with corn gas.\n\nI\u2019ll chime in on using Austin America 1275\u2019s in general because that\u2019s the source of most of my \u2018big bore\u2019 Mini conversions for both race and street. As already pointed out the AA uses the later \u2018thick flange\u2019 block which, in addition to improving block rigidity, provides a better connection between the engine and transmission. This is especially true when used with the latter transmission casing that also has a thicker flange. In addition to the thick flange the AA blocks do not have tappet covers, as seen in the build photos for this Mini, the main bearing webs are thicker and solid, plus a few other structural changes that made them stiffer. The final result is less flexing of the block and less movement between the engine and transmission. A 60\u2019s racing mod (or more likely a bodge) was dimpling the face of the transmission case flange with a center punch, the raised areas supposedly keeping the gasket in place while the block and trans case flexed away. Gaskets working their way out did occur and as the consummate boy racer at that time I dimpled the case on mine. As a bit of trivia, there was a thick flange S block with the improved main bearing webs, but it still had tappet covers. I don\u2019t know how many were made or where they fit into the production run, but I have one of them as well as a thick flange 850 block with tappet covers. I\u2019m saving those for something but I\u2019m not sure what!\n\nAll big bore heads respond well to a mild port, bowl and combustion chamber reshaping and clean-up, smog heads included. That\u2019s the opportunity to reshape the hump inside the intake port created by the smog injection, the only real drawback to a smog head. There\u2019s a tube inside the smog port that I leave in place to somewhat plug the hole, but I\u2019ve never seen the point in trying to plug it completely. The tube then gets ground down along with the hump during porting. Appearance wise the smog heads look much better when the air injection ports are plugged with a set screw that goes all the way inside the injection port, at which point there\u2019s nothing sticking out to call attention to them. The set screws have tapered faces that seat into the flared end of the injection tube. For racing I use a mixture of self-ported smog and non-smog heads as well as Longman non-smog heads, and the engines perform pretty much the same regardless of the origin of the head. That includes running a Longman head and a self-ported smog-head built to similar specs on the same engine during one race weekend with no quantifiable change in lap times. \n\nThe intake and exhaust valves of the AA are smaller than the S but I consider that an advantage. The valves are big enough for a street 1275 and the S heads were prone to cracking between the valve seats, that problem supposedly being resolved in later S engines. And if you want bigger valves in an AA head you get to decide what size to go to. Frequently a smaller exhaust is used than on the S (including on some Longman heads) which reduces the head cracking threat and/or allows even bigger intake valves. A question for @Tfries (The Seller), when the valve seats were replaced were hardened seats suitable for unleaded fuel used? I know there have been comments on other Mini posts that hardened valve seats aren\u2019t necessary, but that\u2019s not my experience. Measurable exhaust valve recession has been a problem starting around the15K to 20K mile mark. Your results may vary.\n\nFor a street engine the most effective mods on an AA are to increase the compression ratio to something near stock Cooper S, that being done through a piston change as it appears this car has. Improvements to the intake and exhaust system also go a long way in waking up the engine. This Mini appears to have a long center branch (LCB) exhaust and that\u2019s always good for the torque curve. Single versus dual SUs are a toss-up as long as you get rid of the cast iron single SU manifold. I\u2019ve used and continue to use both. One advantage of many aftermarket single SU intakes and a few aftermarket dual intakes is that they are water heated, a nice feature in cold climates. The factory air filter housings also help for cold weather because they have the intake snorkel that can be lowered down over the exhaust header. The original wire mesh pancake filters on the 997 Cooper engines (@LarryH \u2013 To me \u2018pancake\u2019 means wire mesh but I\u2019ll readjust to paper pancakes!) had no hot air option, but there was a factory option of a shroud that fit over the pancakes and picked up exhaust manifold heat. It\u2019s in the parts manuals but I\u2019ve never seen one, and I assume it\u2019s there to get it homologated for the early rally cars. If the duals have better mid-range power, as stated by @malsal, I\u2019ve never noticed it on either big bore or small bore A-series engines. For a street engine the stock AA cam works just fine with a really fat torque curve. How high you want to rev it and how much top end power you want is easily adjusted with the cam. Torque is the strong suit of the 1275 for the street, as far as I\u2019m concerned, and that\u2019s what I build for. Race motors are sometimes but not always a different story. \n\nThe other thing that really helps an AA 1275 in a Mini is to lighten the flywheel and connecting rods. The AA flywheel has a huge ring of metal cast into its periphery on the outer face, supposedly to smooth out the power delivery in the heavier AA. It can be easily machined off in a lathe and that brings the flywheel weight down to that of a Cooper 1275. I have the actual weight differences at home, but it\u2019s a significant reduction of several pounds at the outer edge of the flywheel. As I recall the timing marks on the flywheel get removed, but they aren\u2019t difficult to re-do. Light or ultra-light flywheels aren\u2019t really necessary on the street. On the connecting rods for some reason the AA went to 1.75 inch big end journals instead of the 1.625 journals on the S motors. (I believe the Sprite 1275 also kept the smaller journals.) While the larger con rods are okay for a street engine they also have a huge (It\u2019s the Trump era, so everything is \u2018huge\u2019) balance pad cast into the rod cap. Removing the balance pads in a mill also improves the responsiveness of the engine. All four caps can be milled at the same time, reducing machine set up time and helping ensure the same mass of metal is removed from each. Rebalancing is still advisable. Some very early AA engines had the small journal rods and crank but they are not S-quality pieces. However, that hasn\u2019t stopped me from using them in race motors.\n\nWhether or not this car has all of the engine mods described above shouldn\u2019t really matter. Even with the heavy pieces intact and a stock smog head the intake, exhaust and compression ratio changes would still make for a good swap into a Mini. My trust level isn\u2019t that high so I mix race gas with pump gas, which has worked for any trips within a one tank range. But for longer trips I\u2019d use additives. Does anyone have a preferred brand? Between the discussions of no-lead driving, higher final drives for highway cruising, and some commenters saying Minis shouldn\u2019t or can\u2019t be highway driven, it reminded me I haven\u2019t done a Mini road trip in quite some time. I\u2019m planning to take the\u201962 Cooper to the car show at the PVGP in July since I bought the car in Pittsburgh 50 years ago this August. I want to take the Mini trailer too but it won\u2019t fit on the trailer I haul the car with. I could rent a van and put the Mini trailer inside it, but the logistics of loading and unloading, storing the tow rig, etc. keep getting messier. While looking at this thread a light came on; just drive the Mini there, dumb a**, that\u2019s what it\u2019s built for. So a 3,000 mile road trip may be in the cards, unless life or some other reality gets in the way. All he uses for a fuel additive to cut down on valve recession is a few ounces of transmission fluid per tankful. So i said what the heck it won't hurt anything i will give it a try and I ran my 1979 Mini Clubman Estate all over Florida pulling a Camper and to Atlanta and back adding 3 oz of trans fluid per tankful. I got back from the trips around 1600 miles and checked the valve clearances and they were all still good at 12 thou. Around town i don't use any additives and i have read that the valve issues arise after running at highway speeds for long distances which makes sense as the exhaust valves get hot. I have driven it around 8,000 miles total still with no valve issues.
