But the question on the wheel bearings is new ground. When a Mini is converted from drums to S discs it most likely has the tapered roller bearings because the hub carriers must be changed to the disc brake style. That usually means swapping in a complete assembly from an S or sourcing all new parts for an S assembly, including the roller bearings. There\u2019s no reason to use the ball bearings if everything is new, and there\u2019s no reason to disassemble the drum brake hubs and pull the old ball bearings.\n\nIf you are going from Cooper discs to Cooper S discs the hub carriers can be reused, including the ball bearings that are standard with Cooper discs. The only reason for doing that I can think of is because the ball bearings are significantly less expensive than the set of roller bearings and matching machined spacer. To get the correct preload on the roller bearings the spacer between them is precision machined and must be used with its matching bearings. The preload on the ball bearings apparently isn\u2019t as critical since the spacer is sold as a separate part \u2013 one size fits all. There are sets of ball bearings, spacers and seals sold together, but I believe that\u2019s just a case of marketing convenience. The individual roller bearings are only slightly more expensive than the ball bearings and I\u2019ve purchased them separately and machined down a ball bearing spacer to get the correct preload on the rollers \u2013 the ball bearing spacer is wider than the roller bearing spacer. That saved a good chunk of money when I didn\u2019t have any. It seems like the price has come down on the roller bearing and spacer sets, so whether it\u2019s worth machining a spacer for roller bearings depends on which you have more of, time or money. And you don\u2019t need a lathe or a mill to do it either \u2013 I do it with a bench grinder, hand files, grinding compound, a small surface plate, a micrometer, and a lot of time. I've also done the roller bearing swap on several Austin Americas - even though everything else on them is different from a Mini the bearings interchange.\n\nInherent in the discussion above is the fact that the ball bearings and tapered roller bearings are interchangeable. I\u2019ve run the roller bearings in place of ball bearings with standard Cooper brakes for decades, both on street Minis and race Minis. (Yes, I race with Cooper brakes (998 version) when the car is entered as a Cooper rather than an S.) The only interchangeability exception is with very early 850s that had smaller ball bearings. The disc, caliper, CV joint, drive shafts, and disc carrier (the last piece is standard Cooper only) are different between standard Cooper and S, but the hub carriers and bearings will interchange in both directions. At one point in time there was a move towards using ball bearings with S brakes in SCCA racing, but I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s still done. A ball bearing has less contact area than a roller bearing and therefor generates less drag. The kind of grease/oil and grease seals used also affects the drag, but that\u2019s getting into the land speed record domain.
