If it has a cat, then it should also have a Lambda box and a frequency valve between the pressure line and the fuel return, in this case, installed with the fuel distributor at the floor of the engine compartment. If everything is there, and the original EPA testing paperwork is available, the car could be registered in CA, provided it has all of its emissions equipment, and passed. One important note: The emissions equipment didn't have any effect on performance. The emission setup is the same as standard factory tune. the factory exhaust is a large diameter muffler with a single outlet. \nThe engine compartment chassis brace appears to have been modified, as it is square tubing, rather than the original round tubing. Why? I have seen quite a few \"E\" cars, and all have had round tube aft engine compartment braces. \n\nThe Devil straight through (now being reproduced in stainless) is still the preferred bolt on, as it was a factory option, and easy to install (less than 20 minutes to go from cat to Devil, or back when emissions testing time comes along). The R5 Turbo doesn't need much of a muffler, as the turbo absorbs a lot of the sound. The best compliance setups didn't use a muffler at all when a cat was installed. Oh, and throwing away that cat is like throwing away about $14K in value as that is what that cat cost with the emissions setup if you try to certify one today. If the cat is installed without the muffler, the HP is within about 5 hp of stock, and you can always install a Devil system to use between emissions test sessions. \nThe side windows open up not to allow access to the \"cargo bay\" ('cause there isn't one, other than the tennis racket space in what could be called \"the trunk\". The windows have removable pins to allow access to the ENGINE BAY. You can't really work on it unless you pull the windows all the way open, which means pulling the little pins out of the latches. Note that the cover over the trunk space is missing. Also, there are supposed to be some luggage straps. \nThe engine bay looks OK, but there is some funky tube with a bolt for a plug. The fitting that should be there is a BSP plug (not some metric or NPT plug. The coolers had BSP fittings). The hole was probably stripped out. Anyway, re thread it and put a proper plug in it. \nThe engine appears to be a standard 160PS, as there is no shim in the waste gate actuator mount. The engine number plate on the back side of the valve cover is missing. \nThe undercarriage has the usual corrosion, as the paint on the suspension was simple spray on, and was usually showing surface rust on delivery (none of this rust is at all critical. It is entirely cosmetic). Often, the cars were driven to the docks, which meant being driven on salted roads if delivered from a German dealer in winter. Surface rust was sort of standard equipment. This car has replacement dampers (originals were orange DeCarbon R5 Turbo, or Coup Turbo), so I would think that the mileage would be higher than the indicated 16K Kms. Or, it has been in a barn or warehouse for a few years. There seems to be a proper coating of protective dirt, indicating that the car was driven. \nThe Turbo 1 seats are a nice touch, especially when one considers that a pair sold for $14K here recently. Anyway, they are more attractive than the cloth covered Alpine A5 seats that the Turbo 2s came with. \nAll in all, this one looks pretty good from the pictures. Other than the cover for the cargo space behind the engine, it appears to be complete. \nThe tires are probably 20 years old, so replacement would be mandatory. \nThe Turbo 2 8220 with the steel roof is exactly the same as the 8221 with the alloy roof, the only other difference is the 8221's slightly larger engine, which does not produce more power and is not special in any other way. Really, the cars are identical. The body will be fine once cleaned off as it has thick undercoat that has been painted over. The fenders are polyester. The suspension was just spray painted so surface rust would appear almost immediately when the car was driven. Also, the yellow cad plate deteriorates quickly. Normal for these cars, and no problem other than the way it looks. You can get all the fasteners that are rusted from BelMetric if you like to replace nuts, bolts and washers. The last R5 Turbo I did was in horrible shape underneath after being in storage for 34 years AND driven in salt. It will start and run, but will have drivability problems. These can usually be fixed by topping off the fuel tanks with quality fuel, and driving the car. R5tubos cost about $100 to top the fuel tanks, and many are driven short distances and the fuel left to gather moisture. This causes more problems if the fuel pumps, (there are three in these cars) injectors and fuel distributor are left to sit with waterlogged fuel. \r\nIf the car starts easily and idles, that's half the test. The other half is to drive the car and get it warm to make sure that there are no drivability problems. \r\nThe first fix should be putting in a full 23 gallons of fuel and driving the car until it runs better (about half n hour in most cases). The second fix is to install new spark plugs. If you do that, it's important to know which plugs you have, and if you have the plug extenders, and you will need the specific R5turbo/Gordini spark plug wrench if you have the long spark plug extenders. You will know what I am talking about when you remove the plug wire from the plug. If your plugs have extenders, you will need the specific plug wrench as the plugs are way deep in the cylinder head, and the extenders are quite long. The lower fuel sender fell apart upon removal, completely eaten by rust. It is not so much that the car is compact, but that the fuel tanks are HUGE. 23 gallons for that little car, all carried at the CG, under the seats (so when fuel burns off, the handling doesn't change). The best thing you can do with an R5 Turbo is to top the tanks after every drive, just in case it isn't driven for a few months (this is more common than one might think). High alcohol content fuel is problematic, but keeping the tanks topped will mitigate some of the problem with water contamination. Driving it is the best therapy, for both the car and driver. \r\nThere are a lot of parts in the fuel system, and feeding them fresh, water free fuel will keep all of them in excellent condition. \r\nAs for the rest of the car, an accurate alignment, new Bilstein dampers and fresh tires will return incredible 1G grip and stable, solid handling. Most R5 Turbos have very old tires, as this one does, probably more than 30 years old. The only thing that I see that is outwardly wrong is the plugged hose attached to the charge air cooler top housing. This should be a BSP or NPT pipe plug. The original should be BSP, as BSP fittings were used on these castings, and generally found on metric based cars. Oh, and the rear engine compartment removable upper cross member appears to be square tube, rather than the original round tube, with a thinner base material where it bolts into the chassis. Why? 'Don't know... But easily duplicated to original spec and materials, as it is just a straight mild steel, hand welded tube. \r\nA hole in the fuel tank would be unusual, as the tanks are fully enclosed beneath. Occasionally, one would be punctured by someone drilling a hole in the floor, under a seat, to install an amp or something... The tank cover panel is thin fiberglass (polyester). No way to check without removing the seats and the floor panel to expose the tanks and their padding, as well as the crossovers, sender wiring and associated fuel lines. \r\nMost dealers are not at all familiar with these cars, which is not surprising. They are not really complex, but do have an unusual distribution of systems, such as a fuel injection on the floor of the engine compartment, and fuel tanks beneath the seats, multiple fuel pumps, with engine access through fold out side glass. \r\nIt looks like a pretty good R5Turbo that will need new tires before it is enjoyed, and perhaps a proper alignment and fresh Bilstein shocks. \r\nIt looks as though it is on its way to the usual fair market value of around $130K, though the record for an'84 steel top car is around $160K (and this one appears to be somewhat nicer than the last '84, and has all of its original, slightly rusted suspension parts. As for the 185 kit, I can't see the mandatory shim in the waste gate actuator to increase the boost, and the core of the intercooler is not visible, so it can't be determined if the cooler is the flat rail (185PS) type or the standard tube type. The top and bottom castings are the same for each. From what I can see from the pictures, this car doesn't NOT have the 185PS kit, as the waste gate actuator shim is clearly missing. Another way to determine if the car has the increased boost is to accelerate at full throttle and see if the boost gauge goes about 1/3rd into the red zone (red zone was normal for the 185PS kit). I don't recommend this before the type of intercooler is determined. Also, it means that the waste gate arm was messed with, which was strictly forbidden by Renault and AirResearch back then. The shim ensured accurate boost increase from the official factory setting. Messing with the arm adjustment was hit and miss, mostly miss... Anyway, this one has been running a long time... I'd check the cooler to make sure that it is the right type. If not, you can now buy one from 3S Development. Reasonably priced. Direct fit. However, the shim is STILL NLA... \r\nI suspect that this was one of the Peter Schomer (\"Export Sales\") cars as he used Issels for all of his sales. Sometimes, they didn't have everything that was ordered. My car came from Schomer as well, from Issels, the same Renault distributor as this car. Mine did have the 185PS kit, (and a few other bits, but I lucked out, evidently) but it was shipped separately. BTW, Schomer ended up in prison for fraud...
