First, however, the high idle issue. This could be simply a minor vacuum leak (cracked vacuum line or rubber tee fitting), or the electronic idle control module on the firewall could be going south. In regards to the upcoming major maintenace items, it will soon (possibly not for another 40-60k miles) be time for cam chains, sprockets and guides. Usually, but not always, a valve job is needed at this time as well. Compression and leak-down tests will tell the tale. For the mileage, this car presents well, and it's apparent that it was well maintained. The two accidents are a bit of a put-off, but don't appear to have been serious enough to be a major issue. The couple I bought it from are close to 80 years of age and had the car inside its whole life. There is not a spot of rust on it and it is 30 years of age. The interior still smells like it did went it left the showroom floor.\r\n\r\nMost Vehicles that are 30 years old have a few defects.\r\n\r\nTo have no dash cracks or headliner issues at this age is almost amazing. They aren't really interested in selling the car, except maybe for a comfortably high dollar amount, so they set a very optimistic reserve. \r\n\r\nI can see why one would think this makes sense, but a single auction result is never definitive, however. To use auction data to gauge a car's market value, you really have to pool the results of numerous results on similar cars, look at the average and the spread, and try to determine what variables account for the variance. Mileage? Condition? Documentation? Color? Time of year? \r\n\r\nBecause today this particular car got bid to $5600, I can see someone thinking, \"this is at least a $5600 car.\" But a month ago (or a month from now), it could have been bid to $3000, or $7500.
