He was the owner of an Rambler American S/C, that he bought new upon returning from Vietnam, that had a screaming 390, 4 speed with 3:92 Posi, that he ended up rolling over and totaling it. Well he ended up throwing it in his back yard under a tarp for over ten years. Later on in the 80\u2019s we found a Pacer X, very similar but with a red interior, that had the same 258, 3speed auto, with A/C, AM/FM 8 Track with 4 speakers, plus the very same wheels and disk brakes. Well we were just cruising around on a buzz ride when I spotted the Pacer. I quickly turned my Datsun 510 daily bomber around to get a better look. After seeming a decent low mileage Pacer X, that ran and drove fine I mentioned something along the lines of swapping the drivetrain out of the S/C Rambler into the Pacer! Oh man did his stoned red eyes light up! In less than a month we had built one of the quickest Pacers around! With good wide tires all around, wider in the rear of course, we had a PacerX that ran in the 13\u2019s with ease! One of the first with rack and pinion steering, cab forward wider stance with the tires moved out and forward, one of the most aerodynamic cars for the time. Even things like the passenger door is larger to make it easier to get in the back seat, although the doors weigh a ton and are hard of the door hinge bushings. These cars ride way smoother than anything else it size and have a ton more room inside. Would have been cool to see what it would have been like if the original design of having a rotary engine would have turned out. Even still with how heavy their were, they got good MPG on the hwy. City was so/so. There is a long 5% grade near my home and the first time I drove my Pacer up that grade I watched the speedo drop from 70, to 60, to 50, and kept on dropping. Next thing I knew 18-wheelers were pulling to the left to pass me up the grade. No worries, I just dropped in an LS1 from a Corvette that wrapped itself around the tree. The car has been a blast ever since. Even have a couple trophies from the Concourse De' LEMONS in Monterey. \r\n\r\nBTW, with a little power these Pacers handle surprisingly well.
