He owned a '39 coupe and still drove it daily up through the 1980's. He also had a '59 Ranchero he had owned from new. I'd stop in to see the old guy once in a while while driving the '37 in 1983 or 1984. He would be cleaning and maintaining his '39 and '59; every motor head in the county knew of him and his miserly motoring ways. In 1984 or whenever Ford issued the white with red stripe Mustang 350, he sprung for it!!! So now he had three Fords. He died around 1989, left a large sum of money to be set up in a scholarship trust linked to my high school. (Wooster Ohio).\n\nAs I recall his '39 was on a third transmission and 2nd engine overhaul in 1982, and had rounded the 99,999 mark TWICE! but looked and drove like new. In the early days, car bodies were wood-framed under the metal (Morgans still are) to save weight. The all-metal body (GM's 'turret top') did not come along in the late '30s. So wood was standard technology. Wood was also cheap (Ford owned huge tracts of forest land) and there were plenty of skilled workers on staff. Some manufacturers subcontracted wooden bodies to coachbuilders, too, (Cantrell comes to mind).\r\nThese were limited-production vehicles, as well; sedans ruled the market. We could also fix our flats and charge our batteries for free. Bill, the manager was a really good mechanic and especially when it came to flat heads. He taught me a ton of information that I\u2019ve now forgotten. \r\n\r\nHowever, that wasn\u2019t what my comment was going to be about. It just came to mind when I saw this car and remembered a regular customer who had a Woody. I don\u2019t remember they year anymore nor do I remember her name. But she was an older widow and she came in the first of every month to fill up and she also wanted all of her glass cleaned. It was customary to clean the windshield and the back glass and to ask if they\u2019d like their oil checked. And on occasion someone would request their side windows cleaned. No big deal unless you were really busy. But this lady came in every month to fill it up with regular, check the oil and tires, and have all of the glass cleaned. She was as sweet as they come. When I saw her pull in I knew what she wanted and I went to work. She was one of my favorite customers. I may have secretly hated cleaning those windows but she never knew it. I also fixed all of her flats for free and I may have forgotten to charge her for a new battery one time. \r\n\r\nGood luck seller! Thanks for bringing back this memory.
