With careful maintenance, they give little trouble. They have one weakness which can be fatal with a neglectful owner. On a Renault the inner CV joint completely encloses the output shaft and the seal rides against the CV joint itself. Leaks are rarely anything more than a bit of weeping. Lotus modified things so the half-shafts could bear directly against the diff carrier bearings. They added a sleeve which sneeks under the seal and butts against the diff carrier. The half-shafts are shimmed so they bear against this sleeve. It all works a treat but there are now more places for oil to leak out. And most of them do leak a bit.\n\nNot a big deal IF you regularly check your transaxle level. On the 5 speed transaxles, 5th gear is high in the back. The first place to run dry if the oil level drops. 5th gear is a custom Lotus part made by Hewland and has been NLA for a long, long time. There are work arounds using parts from a later 395 transaxle but they are getting thin on the ground now as well.\n\nThe solution? Watch your oil level numb-nuts. They usually don't leak that much but it adds up as the years pass. When I did mine, I set things roughly by eye only to find them way off when using the gauges. (I added adjustable suspension to mine).\r\n\r\nLooking at photo 20 specifically, the front camber looks slightly less than the rear which is about right.\r\n\r\nFront and rear cambers are not adjustable on a stock Europa. If the camber is off, it indicates wear or damage. The most common issue being collapsed bushings in the rear. \r\n\r\nAgain, this example looks fine to me. I would recommend a four wheel alignment for any Europa. Is it possible that is why the stock wheels are no longer installed? \r\n\r\nA deeper inspection of that right side rear suspension , or more information from the seller could put this issue to bed.\r\n\r\nAt minimum , that trailing arm would need straightening , welding and reinforcement or full replacement. Then after removing the inboard end of the half shaft from the transaxle you have to get the outboard axle yoke out of the hub, which I have found usually requires a custom made pusher, as there is no purchase for a standard device. After that you can get the bearing carrier out of the trailing arm. Then you go after the bolt at the front of the trailing arm, which is a \"treat\". Don't forget to replace the hub bearings and seal, and you probably want to consider the 47 year old U joints, because nobody I know in their right mind wants to do this twice! As literarymadness says, that was actually always an option for the TC in 1972. What was more interesting is that they were all written by the proprietor of Lotus Mid-South, whom I knew at the time! That took me back!\r\n\r\nBut back to the name of the interior. In all those bulletins, the word \"biscuit\" is not found so maybe I remembered it incorrectly or it was thrown around as another word for \"champagne.\" The alternate interior color starting with the TC was \"oatmeal\" and was apparently vinyl. I think I can comment on a few things. I bought 4339R when I was in the navy in Rota, Spain. It was built in 3/74, but I was not able to go and pick it up until 5/74, because I had quite a bit of trouble getting \"permission\" from the Spanish authorities to bring it there. I was discharged from the navy in late June, and drove 10K miles in Europe, with my tent and sleeping bag, before shipping it home. It was Black/gold with an Oatmeal interior. The entire interior, including the console was Oatmeal. The seats did have cloth inserts, bottom and back.\nI just dug up my original order sheet, invoice, and the Manufacturers' Statement of Origin. I would love to post them, or a link to it, if someone could tell me what to do. In other words, there are many original black and gold Specials from around that time that were not USA cars that thus did not have the badge, and are not one of the 150. I had one here in Canada whose history I could trace back to the dealer: it was a fully original 1973 black and gold Special, and hence I am pretty certain it would be considered, anywhere else in the world, a \u201cJPS\u201d car. But it ain\u2019t one of 150 (or is it 200?), and of course being a Canadian car it had no dash badge.\n\nOne of the features of the Special when it came out was the cosmetic lower sill that smartens up the line below the doors: these actually had the colour impregnated in the fibreglass.
