The engine was amazing and I still love the look of the car. It was a very fun car to drive. But the build quality was terrible. Once a month I went over the car tightening screws and fastners because if I didn't the car would literally fall apart as I drove it. The paint (burgundy metallic) looked great when new but was impossible to keep from staining. It was particularly vulnerable to acid rain. In 1988 I was interested in a GNX and the Buick dealer in Delray Beach had one on the showroom floor. With the dealer markup it stickered for $63K. Too rich for my blood and probably the reason you never see a GNX with hardly any miles on it. Everyone who bought a GNX put it in storage. A loaded Grand National at the time was just over $19,000. Many other typical GM cars were in the high-teens and low-twenties, while nice Z-28s and Trans Ams were also around $20k. Corvette was around $30k, a little more for a loaded convertible. So, $30,000-plus was pretty spendy at the time for most people for a limited-production Turbo Regal. For the price of a GNX, you could buy a Grand National, a nice used daily driver, and have money left over to take a vacation.\n\nA family friend bought a GNX at the same we bought our GN (our GN was his order, which he gave to us once he knew he would get the GNX). Back then, I remember my dad talking about how the GNX was crazy money... Yet, he had no problem buying an '89 Corvette Convertible two years after he bought the GN. I've heard stories about a fair number of nice, clean, low-mileage GNX's changing hands when they were five years old for well under what most people paid for them new - like, in the low- to mid-$20's!
