As you indicate, the beauty of the car is that the 4 speed transmission is geared quite long, and the car relies on the naturally aspirated torque of the big M119 engine to hurtle itself through autobahn velocities. \n\nThe thing that no modern car can match is the fact that this car does not have the frantic/dramatic shift-shift-shift-shift qualities that modern 7/8/9/10 speed automatics do. There's only 4 speeds, and acceleration is super-naturally-aspirated-instant. Imagine for a second that you are turning 3000 rpm at \"normal highway speed\" in 4th gear. The car is super quiet at this speed, because MB paid SO. MUCH. ATTENTION to NVH in this era. New cars have nothing on M119 engine's NVH characteristics. 3000 rpm happens to be the start of the extra-meaty part of the torque curve. Now, if you depress the accelerator with some moderate vigor, the car will PULL PULL PULL like crazy --- the car is *already* on cam! No need to shift down from some ridiculously long 7th gear!\n\nThe feeling of \"Always being on cam on the highway without any drama \" is this car's ultimate raison d'\u00eatre. Modern cars don't have this feeling. On paper it looked great - well over 300 hp, 25mpg, great 0-60 and decent 1/4, good suspension etc. It could not hold a candle to my 1999 C43 8 cylinder, naturally aspirated, 302 HP, 5 speed. Even though the 2015 6 cylinder had more HP and supposedly more torque it was a very hollow driving experience. When you stomped on the gas pedal on the highway it had to kick down so many gears, even though it was a supercharged car it felt worse than the worse early turbo lag cars. The way it got great gas mileage was gearing and other \"tricks\" that take away from driving experience. Also the uniform torque delivery on the naturally aspirated 8 cylinder C43 blew away the 6 cylinder car. (okay a bit of an exaggeration, but you get my drift) Aside from natural aspiration and lack of need to pressurize intake piping as in modern forced induction cars, I think there is also another reason why the 500E throttle response feels so awesome at highway / autobahn speeds....and that is.....\r\n\r\nBecause the Auto Trans does not have a lockup feature on the torque converter.\r\n\r\nSince there's no lockup function, what you press (on the pedal) is what you get in engine rpm. If you press the accelerator with moderate vigor at warp factor 2 to go warp factor 3, you get the same linear scaling in engine RPM. No need to wait for the torque converter to unlock. No need to wait for rpms to jump.
