Bought new in 1980 by Grant and Janice Bunnell at Lone Star Cadillac in Dallas, the car spent most of its life in Grapevine, TX, with a couple trips to the owners\u2019 summer home in Montana. At some point after losing her husband, Janice bought a new SUV and the Seville was used sparingly, but was still much loved. Janice got dementia some 15 years before her death, but refused to part with the Seville, so her son, Bill, who has a ranch in the Dallas area, stored the car in one of his barns. I would absolutely agree that this first year, 6.0 liter V8 was the best ever. From there the drivetrain became less and less impressive. 1981 brought us the miracle V8-6-4 that when it worked properly it provided great torque from a dead stop to very good fuel economy as it shut down fuel from 8 cylinders, to then 6 cylinders, to final cruise speed running on 4 cylinders. Great concept but poor real results. Most of the time the vibration increased as the operating cylinders decreased and the transition decreasing and/or increasing wasn't always smooth either. The quick fix was to disconnect the V8-6-4 system (2 connectors) and operate on the full 368 V8 100% of the time, which was a 2nd place runner up in torque/HP to the real 6.0 liter 1980 engine. From there the power plant became marginal with the introduction of the aluminum head HT4100 which was the lesser of two gas engine evils. Dishonorable mention goes to the Cadillac V6 and the 350 V8 diesel conversion, both of which would require pages of detailed ilk description but could both be fully described in one word.... junk. The king is without question the 6.0 V8. The first, the last and the forever choice of all Cadillac Seville collectors! An absolutely fabulous automobile that Cadillac got it right the first time and then continued on trying to reinvent the wheel (powerplant) and ultimately failing. Ironically, there is a 1982 Chrysler Imperial bustle-back being auctioned currently. Chryslers sailed attempt to capture some of the allure Cadillac owned and controlled. Lastly, this era of Seville was styled after Bentleys/Rolls of the past and gave this automobile a truly great European flare, coupled with the Elegante' option and it was the best domestic luxury car on the market (IMHO). THIS CAR has all that with the 368 big block gasser which in the long run is a much better set up as for performance and maintenance,although I'm fond of the diesel. Some key memories of that'80.... Learning how to fix the driver's window regulator (have no idea why a brand new car was having a problem with the window falling off the track lol), car driver magazine reporting to 0 to 60 time of 28 seconds in the diesel lol, watching my dad react when 17-year-old older brother got hit in the rear quarter panel because somebody ran a red light and despite flooring it, poor diesel could not get out of its own way, dealing with winter weather cold starts lol, watching my mom trying to figure out the alarm system, and finally the aftermath after the car burned up on the side of the road from some electrical fire! Despite all that and some really cool memories in that car being dropped off to school, vacations, etc it was the coolest car in town! Hard to pin down the exact 0-60 time for this Seville, but I've read between 8-9 seconds in some places and more like 12 seconds in others. In any event, while its not a stop light racer, it feels like it has plenty of power for normal driving. The '85 Seville I had with the HT4100 wasn't as slow as the diesel you describe, but you really had to make sure you had plenty of room before pulling out into traffic.
