A few years later I resurrected a 1960 station wagon much like this car with my dad. I found it with a seized engine, which we broke loose hydraulically by pumping oil into the combustion chamber. We then removed the head, polished the rust from the cylinder walls, slapped everything back together, and drove the car from Detroit to Massachusetts without missing a beat. Remarkable how much abuse these cars will take. Sitting is what hurts them; every system is better off racking up the miles as a daily driver than resting in a HEPA-filtered garage. \r\n\r\nChassis rust is the primary killer of the DS/ID. Early unibody design and thin French sheetmetal did not take kindly to salted American roads, as my first two cars could attest. Picture #37 is a good indicator of this car's condition, as it shows the low point of the trunk floor, which usually disappears first. Left in a midwestern field with flat tires, the chassis is in direct contact with the ground, and you can imagine what happens. My first car had somehow lost its piston rings and sat in my dad's back yard for several years; when we finally moved it, whole chunks of side box sections were left in the dirt. The metal on this car looks fantastic from what I can see, though the surface rust underneath should be treated as soon as possible to prevent rust-through. Protective products such as Waxoyl should be used in the side box sections regularly so they don't rust from the inside out. \r\n\r\nShame that the original blue was painted over, though black always looks good on these cars. Every body panel can be removed rather easily and taken to the paint booth, so returning it to the factory color is nowhere near as daunting as it would be on most cars. To say the roof is removable is a bit of an overstatement, though. Yes, it unbolts and can be lifted off, but it isn't quite like a targa top that you toss in the trunk. The top was likely bare fiberglass from the factory. The contrasting white looks good, though.\r\n\r\nToo many of these are ending up trailer queens with values rising. I imagine that their survival during WWII helped them a lot in developing workarounds to everything the Nazis did to them. Having no oilfields, they're now the most nuclear-powered country in the world (80%), and seemingly doing it in a very smart way vs the rest of us - no Chernobles, no 3 mile islands.....and thank the French for inventing CAD via Dessault, their military aircraft builder. I was surprised to learn that when doing research for Dupont's first Detroit-based CAD system back in the early '80s - IBM bought their software from the French. it is just astounding to me that their breadth of thinking ranged from the lowly but loved 2CV to the Citroen SM, all after the historic Traction Avant, which was based on the US Budd Corp. development of wide strip steel which allowed the stamping of huge single piece bodyside stampings, which enabled the TA design. I recently learned that Budd is the father of the all-steel automobile - doing away with steel-clad wood frames. And Andre Citroen's co. worked intimately with Budd to bring the Traction to market, including FWD for large volume cars. \r\n\r\nBut frankly, I still marvel at the fact that their management (Michelin since 1935) or bean counters didn't kill them at the first thought of the DS/ID. Either mgmnt was asleep, or the Michelins thought of Citroen as their playtoy for promoting the radial tire they invented when no one else could make the radial work. \r\n\r\nAnd for those of you who may think racing led to the invention of paddle-shifters that have infiltrated many modern cars, think back to the \"finger wand\" shifter that debuted on the 1955 Citroen DS19 - THERE is the first \"paddle shifter' - flick your finger from the steering wheel rim to the wand and viola, gears shift sans clutch. \r\n\r\nCitroen has to be the greatest innovator I've ever seen - it appears they just start from the fundamentals - physics - look at the basic rules of nature, and start from scratch. The idea of a \"box\" around thinking is totally alien to them. Surely they get a lot wrong, but when they do it right, it's a Wowser! \r\n\r\nAnd as KG says, those chassis shots look very promising. There's some light surface rust right in the groove of the floorpan where it meets the sill sidewalls. That groove is due to how the sheetmetal is folded up, then down, to provide a pinchweld flange to join floorpan to sidewalls, and its that fold where moisture gathers, but those grooves look quite good. Still, whenever one checks a Citroen chassis for rust, thumping all the box sections with a light hammer will signal by sound what their condition is. I was wondering if perhaps the sound was from one of the wheel bearings, difficult to tell without driving the car. If the sound is truly only in 4th gear, and if it's sensitive to load (that is, more pronounced or less under power or on the overrun) the first thing I'd suggest is to check the torque on the nut on the front of the bevel pinion shaft. The nut sometimes becomes \"loose\" (though it doesn't really unscrew; I have my theories how this happens). When it does, it affects the pinion meshing depth. Sometimes retorquing the nut can solve your problems.\n\nBut torquing the nut is not really that easy, as you must block the gearbox internally by engaging two gears at once. This means removing the gearbox cover.... Nothing is entirely simple.\n\nGearbox parts are generally available, as #citman says, but some are more available than others. The bearings can be rather expensive, but the last two early D gearboxes I've been through did not need bearings.\n\nThe gearbox in my own 1961 DS19 has been making some strange gearbox noises for the past 50,000 km or so. Do the pistons (2 per caliper block) move freely during application and after release? Are they sticking at all? The most common problem with these early cars with DOT 3 fluid systems is binding of the caliper parts. One really good thing going for this car is its prev history in NM - meaning corrosion in the brake calipers may be slim to none. Anywhere W. of the Rockies the brake fluid and atmospheric moisture in humid climates would cause the mix of aluminum piston blocks and steel pistons to create electrolytic corrosion between pistons and their mounting block, causing them to bind up. Their very small diametral clearance tolerance would disappear due to corrosion oxides jamming the pistons in their bores. A complete teardown, cleaning and new Orings will restore them to free movement, so the question is - what shape are these calipers in? I see an extra set amongst the spare parts, and the new owner would be wise to study these by disassembling them, understanding them, and even doing a few simple mods that I've found work very well in extending the life of these units before the next rehab. As for spares, brake pad sets sometimes show up on Ebay, or Ebay.fr - using Babelfish as a translator. And the backing plates may even be relineable by a good brake shoe/clutch rebuilding shop. The only parts that ever need replacing on these calipers are the Orings (which must be of ethylene propylene rubber - not nitrile or neoprene) and pads. Amazing how that 70 hp mill would slowly work itself up to 90 mph with the pedal to the floor, and glide along at that speed all day with 27 mpg. One trip W. there were 4 of us in the car, a sophomore girl was driving at night with me asleep in front pass seat. As I woke up I glanced at the speedo and saw 90 - I asked her how she was doing - \"just fine\" she said with a grin on her face. Smooth as glass that car was with the brake fluid coursing thru its system - no power steering or brakes on that car, but those inboard front discs are SO GOOD any way you push them, and the steering so accurate with all the suspension arms connecting to the body via Huge Rollerbearings along with super accurate R&P steering with relay arms also mounted not in rubber bushings, but adjustable BALL BEARINGS! You can split a gnat's eyelash with the steering on these cars. I challenge anyone to name another car that has all its joints anchoring it to the road being lined with micro-ground ball and rollerbearings versus cheapo rubber!!! Most owners aren't even aware just how incredibly expensive this car was to build vs. anything else on the road. Personal true story: Around 1987 I was working with a GM executive engineer who told me he and another exec. imported a '57 DS19 that same year, tore it down, cost-analyzed it and learned for GM to build that car would have COST THEM $10,000 - let alone SELL it. Until you've worked yourself on a lot of different US/European cars and one of these, you'll never understand how well engineered they are by comparison to anything else. \r\nOne more note: Two yrs ago, an ID19 showed up at the very expensive California Mille start in front of the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill in SF. Its lime green paint and perfect original color cloth interior was simple but stunning. The car looked a bit plain next to all the flashy Italian & British iron, but it sure gathered attention as many participants had never seen one up close. By the end of the run, many of the other owners were pretty impressed at the ease with which that ID stayed on their tails in spite of having only 70 hp, as the owner never had to slow down for any corner or rough road, and he was a helluva lot fresher at the end of each day's run than the others! Those 750 mile runs back & forth to college, especially wide open thru Nevada, were the most driving fun I've ever had. Following graduation spring '66, two roommates & I drove that car from Claremont to N. Jersey in 4 days to catch a plane to Europe for summer jobs. 2,742 miles straight across the US - no sweat - even slept in it - all three of us - as the front seats fold completely flat! Having recently outfitted a '64 Bristol 408 Mk I and a '53 Bristol 403 with Michelins from Longstone I was impressed when the first order for the 408 reached me in Ca. in one week, and no shipping charge as by shipping them out of the UK the high VAT was excluded, making the tires a relative bargain. Same for the 403 for the car in Michigan. I'd heard good things about Longstone and can vouch for them. The new Xs on the 408 with Chrysler V8 was transformed into a much smoother and quieter car when the Pirellis on the car when I bought it were replaced. The URL Fez listed below might have confused some ancient information on the Cits where the rear tires were 155s, while the fronts were 165. Go all around with the 165 tires. The only US source for these Michelins is probably Coker, but I believe their prices are higher as I think they charge for delivery. Also very important: use radial tubes in the Xs - I've lost more tubeless tires on modern cars than I ever lost Xs with tubes on my Cits. And I used tubes in the Michelins for the Bristols & have never had a flat tire with tubes unless I got a severe puncture, whereas I've had lots of tubeless tires go flat while sitting. \r\n\r\nUGW: A Subi drivetrain would put the engine ahead of the transaxle, and destroy the balance of the car. The DS/ID is a true MID_ENGINE FWD car - the transaxle is ahead of the engine, and you can't beat that balance. With the major weight near the car's center, combined with its very long wheelbase, you can switch lanes in a Cit so fast it'll snap your neck. The polar moment of inertia of the car is outstanding, and a front engine would really mess it up even if you could stuff a Subi in there, and it would have to be one of the early flat 4s as the OHC engines are most likely too wide. If you want to hotrod the early engines, which are hemis from the start, just raise the compression ratio and build a multi-throat intake manifold like the one I got from a Datsun racer in Delaware in 1972 - he'd lightened the huge flywheel and worked over the engine and did all right with the car in various races. Check out Alderman Datsun of I think Newcastle Del. back in the '60s. \r\n\r\nRe the unique engineering - the engine/transaxle are very normal - similar but more robust than the Traction Avant, which was built from 1935 thru 1957! The DS/ID simply added an ally crossflow hemi head on the Traction block, went with shell bearings but otherwise was near identical to that proven conventional engine. Same for the gearbox - all it did was integrate the diff - no big deal - not as fancy as a Mini with the gears in the sump! \r\nAnd the hydraulics are simply PLUMBING - but higher pressure, and once you release the pressure, its just a bunch of tubes, very simple valves, and an exquisite pump which lasts virtually forever with near zero care as long as you use the right fluid. Think of the suspension as a conventional bottle jack at each corner, with remote control of all 4 wheel heights at the touch of a lever by the driver's left foot. It ain't rocket science. Same for the brakes - they work the same way every other brake in the world works, altho the front early calipers ('55 thru '65) integrate a self-adjusting park brake which is a bit of clockwork with ratchets, but easily understood once you take one apart, and this car comes with practice calipers, and that's hard to beat! Plus whoever gets this car can contact me anytime and I can give them all the improvements I've worked up over 55 yrs of owning/driving/fixing/improving these masterpieces. Again, not rocket science and all parts are avaliable thru various US/European suppliers and clubs. Too low, and the diaphragm inside can be pushed up against the sharp end of the filler screw and be punctured. The rubber in the brk flu spheres is amazing - maybe Michelin tire rubber? while the seals are all ethylene propylene. I sold a '59 DS19 a few yrs ago which I had had for 35 yrs - bought in 1971 from a used car dealer in Delaware - for $35! After spending 4 hrs in the car lot fixing the 2CV-type dual point box under the intake manifold, I drove it home - the dealer was pissed! 35 yrs later, when rehabbing the car for sale, I tested the sphere pressures. Fronts should have nitrogen at 900 psi - these held 800!!! I was astonished. The later spheres on mineral fluid cars - like ATF - actually turn to paste after 10 yrs or so. However, make abosolutely sure this car never sees any \"modern\" brake fluid which says SYNTHETIC ON THE CONTAINER! The car was super-expertly prepped by @metric for the event and it ran without any issue, outpacing and out-handling much stronger machinery. We truly were the most odd of the oddballs and got the most looks as well. And because of this, quite a few other CA Mille participants (including me) went out and bought an early ID or DS. \r\n\r\nEverything good about those cars has been said already in this and other threats. I am a huge advocate of the earlier D-series cars of the first series like this one. They were not loved for a long time, mainly because of the immense progress of later cars and the LHS version of the fluid. I believe that the market now has woken up to those for many reasons and prices are currently escalating.\r\n\r\nFirst, the mechanical concerns are becoming less important as the early cars are simpler and there are many out there so knowledge is still around. Given an increase in value, a contaminated suspension, that previously was the death knell of many early cars is now just a semi-expensive repair with most, if not all parts available. Engines are simple and robust to start with and the infamous inboard front brakes are also no more worrisome as those on the back on any Aurelia or Flaminia.\r\n\r\nSecond, early cars are rare. Very early cars are even events eligible and the famous early four-digit cars and 56/ 57 models are often traded in six figures (sedans that is).\r\n\r\nThird, they are the purest form of the fabulous and inventive Bertoni (A sculptor by training) shape. To me, no other D-series looks as fabulous as the early cars, save for the Chapron specials.\r\n\r\nBuy now, buy often. They are serious fun and will not get cheaper. You buy a piece of art and a piece of one of the most important mechanical achievements of the 20st century. Good luck with the sale and all the best to the new owner.
