It was followed by the E30 which, due to the new six cylinder engine available sold even better. Having studied the photos more closely I believe this car is worth saving. Fix the rust (the worst confined to the front fender and rocker on one side) and repaint up to the rub rail. Then you have a nice driver condition car without a punitive investment. And, I agree that a slick top is a bonus: No water in the cabin due to leaky sunroof or rotten/plugged drain tubes, and more headroom for taller drivers (headroom is lacking in these cars but at 6'5\" I fit tightly).
