Birch Gray is a absolutely stunning flat medium gray and one of the absolute best colors on the XK120. Silver was available for the model up until 1952. Before the bidding heats up tomorrow, I will share a short story. Back in the 1970's I had already owned several early Jaguar sedans bit the XK120 cars were out of reach. I saw an ad in the Los Angeles Times for a 1933 SSI Open Tourer, selling for $700.00. I had the money and snapped it up. The owner had purchased it when he was visiting New Zealand and brought it back with him and now he needed the money. It turned out the car was originally a hard top and someone cut the top off. It came with the door pieces that had been chopped but nothing else. The joy for me was that everything else about the car was unmolested and original. It also ran wonderfully and the mechanical brakes still worked great. However, I did not feel I could restore the car on my salary and only owned it for a few years. Then I listed it in Hemmings Motor News as a \"trade for an XK120\". I traded it for a 1951 XK120 OTS with wire wheels and a 1956 CHevy Corvette 2-cylinder engine installed. A wonderful restoration project for my 4-year old son and me. It turned out the car originally came with spats and solid rims (like the car being auctioned here), so I located the correct components and converted the wheels back to original. I also located a donor engine from a Mark VII and an XK120 transmission. I had a welder comer over one weekend to rebuild the transmission mount and to reconstruct the messed up firewall. Luckily the original engine mounts were intact. Long story short, three years later I had painted the car a Pastel Blue, installed two-tone Blue/Grey interior, Blue Hood (softy top), new set of gauges and much more. I entered my car in the Classic Jaguar Association 1985 Concours in Long Beach, CA and achieved a score of 98.00 points. Not bad for my first show. Over the years I have owned and restored almost 20 Jaguars. The are such wonderful cars, worth every penny spent. I got used to the fact that \"you may leave home in your Jag but might return home in a tow truck.\" I am also lead author of the official 182-page, Jaguar XK120 JCNA Concours d'Elegance Judging Guide now in its third edition. I agree with DaveD on this one. being an older restoration it can land 95-105k based on the similar past cars that have gone through. It seems that if the car will even pull over 120k it has to be a fairly fresh restoration and as clean underneath as it is on top not necessarily a JCNA all correct car, but a show car full frame off restoration , and to everyone that has that story of buying these cars back in the day for under a grand and kicking themselves for letting it go, or not having the funds to buy it back then consider what a house was back then. My father purchased his 120 in 1960 when he was 26. We did a full frame off restoration on the car that was completed in 2015 and have 100k in receipts, and we did 75% of the restoration ourselves. So you could buy this 53 120 Roadster right now almost 5 decades later minus all the storage, insurance, registration, repairs, and live the dream all over again for less money than it cost to have kept those cars all along and not go through one if not two restorations during that timeline. Do I wish this car would pull 150k absolutely, it would only mean that my car would be worth that much more. I do believe that if you are not mechanically inclined, and had to pay everyone to do a restoration on one of these cars it could easily get to that 200k mark. I am little surprised on the paint match on the driver door on this one looks a few shades off, or maybe it is just the pictures I could be wrong. As an owner, I would have hold on as well.\n\nThe market for XK120 cars cooled off significantly over the past year. Supply of decent and good cars is plentiful. The absolute best cars sell for around $130k. But those are truly correct concours restorations with super high JCNA scores. Remember the black over biscuit interior 1950 model on BaT a few months back (s/n 670499)? Likely the best that was on the market in the US and after being around the block a few times, finally found a new owner at RM's online Palm Beach auction for $130k at the hammer.\n\nThe rest sells for $75k - $100k for nice drivers. See the spectacular battleship gray car that sold here the other day for $104k. Was not a perfect car but a perfect provenance and simply superb colors (People, leave your cars in the colors they came with!).\n\nThis car here also has been around the block a few times: 2018 at Bonham's in Scottsdale, sold for an all-in with commission for $80.6k. Resold at RM in Scottsdale this year for $92.5k at hammer/ $103.6k with 12% commission. In my opinion, given color change, some questions about color, etc. the RM result was very well sold. So for me, market should be between the hammer bid at RM and the result today. No harm done and I hope that the owner will keep enjoying this great car. Or maybe a deal can be had after the auction. It is not easy times to sell cars.
