Not exactly in the direction I planned but what a fun journey. I am in love. \r\n\r\nWhat needs to be said is how these should be driven. Yes it should be with brio, verve, and passion, preferably winding out the V12 to 7000rpm with the window down in a tunnel but that forgets these cars are the ultimate long distance GT cruiser. Escape the city roads. I have owned or driven many types of modern and exotic classic cars over the years but the Espada is the ultimate continent crusher. A Ferrari Daytona or Ferrari 400 do not measure up the same in my driving of them - they are for poncing appearances by show ponies along the beachfront in Santa Monica. I have driven 800 miles in a day, averaging ....err...a fairly high speed, and hopped out feeling fresh and good. My daily driver current model BMW X5 does not treat me that well. The Espada seats look thin and flat. You initially sit in them and think lack of back support - but the fears never eventuate and you feel comfortable all day. \r\n\r\nThe driving experience feels truck-like initially. That bolt action gear lever that does not, will not, nope, refuses to be rushed without a graunch of the gears. Methodical, slow, precise changes, feeling out each gear tooth as you slot the direct gear change home - no long linkages on this rifle bolt change action. The steering feels like a couple of elephants are sitting on the hood but then as you head north of 70mph into triple digits the weighting is perfect - a slight squirming on the 70 profile tires but oh so confidence inspiring feel. Overtakes are breathtaking - drop a cog, mash the right loafer and the fat lady in the front starts bellowing her full Weber opera while those being overtaken are left bewildered at what just hauled ass past them. And its not just smooth tarmac that an Espada likes. In Arizona and Utah I despatched washboard dirt roads with aplomb, even hung the tail out for fun although watch the slow steering lock as the car is long and it takes a while to tack your cruise ship back into line. The ride is impeccable - just the right balance of firmness and comfort. I had it on snow in Colorado and Oregon and it did surprisingly well slithering about up to about 3 inches depth at which point I put on snow chains - yes they are made to fit your Espada by Konig. Obviously, the Europeans know how an Espada should be driven.\r\n\r\nThe Espada has immense presence. Other road users know immediately when it is in their midst as heads swivel and phones are presented for photos. It's that perfectly styled Italian suit. Crisp lines styled by Gandini, draped just right, not an inch out of shape, stylishly hiding a true 4 seater supercar of the 70s. A 6 foot passenger is very comfortable in the sculpted rear seat, plenty of legroom, with a great view out from the large windows. Its long low and cat like. It was big for its time. Today it looks small and impossibly low. Range up behind some slow-poke Charlie in the Camry hogging the fast lane and, trust me, even the dopiest inattentive driver wakes up instantly and gets out of your way, to look at this strange creature devouring the roads. You never have a chance to flash the headlights. Its also low enough you can drive under some parking barriers in Seattle - don't ask me how I know. \r\n\r\nYes the Italian electrics on the dashboard do go all Lucas-like from time to time but you don't care as you are just enjoying the driving moment. But the air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems work brilliantly at all extremes - 100 degrees in Monument Valley with the massive glasshouse of the Espada? No problems sir! Let Mr Espada keep you cool, calm and collected while you concentrate on dodging wayward tourists! \r\n\r\nHowever, it is a thoroughbred and will have its odd moments of failure. Who knew the top of the gearbox is a perfect shape to be a swimming pool of clutch fluid? 16 quarts later, I do now. But don't let that discourage you. Its amazing what you can do on a backroad to bodge yourself to a better specialist fix. There are great resources on these cars all over the USA. Some amazing owners, who I have met, who took the time to educate numpty me so I could keep my bull roaming wide. There are some wonderful specialists who can assist keeping your car mechanically tip top all over the country - I think I have met most of them in person now? \r\n\r\nWhoever buys this car, drive it please, as it was designed to do - bludgeoning a cross-continent journey into submission. The carbs were removed when I first got the car to clean everything up and to adjust the valves. Since then, the motor has been solid. I had a leaking water pump a few years ago and rebuilt that. I have had to do clutch. We resurfaced the flywheel and pressure plate, replaced the throwout bearing and rebuilt the disk. Later we rebuilt the brake and clutch master and slave cylinders. I put on new brake pads when the brakes cylinders were done. The clutch and brake work was done by Prancing Horse in Burlingame, CA. I have only put 11,000 miles on it in 28 years. That said, I drove it to every show except the Las Vegas Concours in 2019.
