Texas Instruments never provided the brain for these. The initial series 2 dashboard design was initially given to grad students at Cranfield Institute of Technology in England. They weren't given enough time to get right so when the first car was shown at the 78 press event (or shortly after) smoke started pouring out from under the dashboard (and forced the AM execs to have to push the car off the podium) so AM got desperate. That's when Peter Sprague came into the picture. He was president of National Semiconductor ( Lane Research) and used his contacts and influence to come up with a quick fix to get the car back on track. He contacted people with Javalina Corporation, an aircraft instrument specialist in Frisco, Texas to try to adapt what the kids at Cranfield had come up with. Brian Refoy the president of Javalina (I knew him from when I was a private pilot) told me once that the Crainfield setup weighted something like 200lbs and had a 300 pair (strands of wire) that went from the dash to a series of computers that were mounted under the seats. This wasn't going to work obviously. He owed favors to National Semiconductor for helping them develop the some of the first EFIS systems so his team dug in. In less than 45 days they had totally redesigned the entire system and had the car on the road for testing and within 90 days AM were delivering Lagondas. \n\nThis was an interim solution and all of the electronic boxes were hand etched and hand soldered by Javalina and with development and build cost it helped to almost double the intended cost of the car. \n\nFrom the moment the first car was delivered Javalina was working on a \"better\" solution. They had been designing a new vector based system for the F-15 Eagle and Brian convinced Sprague that this would be more durable and advanced (not to mention elegant) so they built the 3 CRT setup in the series 3 cars. These systems used the same base CPU but with an additional processor shared with the F-15! However, this didn't work out to be any more reliable or cost effective (more then double the LED display) so AM scaled back their ties with Javalina. By then (1987) Everyone was doing digital so for the series IV they took the base sensor package and contracted with a French company to adapt it to a new vacuum florescent package similar to what Chrysler and GM were using in an effort to improve the overall system and make them more reliable. It never worked as the original Javalina designed hand build CPU was still there and you could never fix that. \n\nAs I have mentioned before I have worked on a Series III dash and it is something to behold. They have more then 150 wires alone for the dashboard displays. That is compared to about 25 for a contemporary cluster.
