In Germany, a guy has one in the same color. He converted the car to a hardtop convertible. Can be done because of the rigid chassis. But taking off the top requires at least four people or a crane.\r\nThe nice thing about the D model is the \"Einspritzer\" compared to the carburetor from the a,b,c versions. Also shape of the back end is much nicer. Downside of this car is as some mentioned, the cost of a full restoration. You will probably never see a return on investment.\r\nA future BAT add could read...Over $150.000 invested, asking $70.000. Sad but true. This is a car for hands on person who can take care of its issues himself. Another downside is its 3 speed Borgwarner Automatic. Mercedes didn't have its own automatic yet. A friend of my fathers who worked in Sindelfingen in the 60's (prior to working in Montvale headquarters) said that many cars where sent back to be refitted with a standard column shift. But still a majestic car that will turn many heads at a Veterans Day parade or also great for driving a bride to the ceremony. I have always wanted one and was hoping this one would have a reasonable reserve. The comment from an earlier person about his Rolls/Bentley being more enjoyable than a 300 in his possession was interesting and represents what is probably an overarching issue with this vintage Mercedes in that it is not as developed as English and American cars of the same vintage. While it is one of the most stately automobiles of that period in my opinion it still was suffering from the rebuilding effort of post WWII Germany. They are outrageously expensive to buy parts for as mentioned and are not in the same category as almost any other car of the 50's.\r\nBut even though the parts are expensive the \"Adenauer \" has just not ever been very collectible, perhaps that is changing but I would be surprised if so. It is an example of the whole being worth less than the sum of it's parts. One in far superior and almost pristine condition sold at Mecum last spring for $40,000. The gentleman that sold his a couple of years ago on B.A.T. got what was a market correct price at the time as I followed it closely but passed because I wanted a \"D\". \r\nI have been obsessed with these for almost half a century but still cannot pull the trigger due to the wild asking prices and \"real\" sales prices. I'm not posting this until after the auction ends as I do not want to unfairly prejudice a potential market upswing on the value of this beautiful car and also might even bid on it which would make it a self serving critical comment.
